The best place to ride in the south.........

Questions & Answers
« on: July 09, 2008, 21:21:57 PM »

Just updated the website as we always tend to get the same questions about the park so we've hopefully answered some here - I'm sure you've all got some more to ask........... (tusk.......   Roll Eyes )

Q: What level of rider do I need to be to ride the park?
A:  Trails at the park have been designed to encourage people to ride and progress there riding ability. Most of the trails are ridable by all levels of rider and do feature the odd drop or difficult section but we always try to include an alternative run (although slower) around the feature.

Q: What are your opening times?
A: The Park is open 7 days a week 365 days a year.

Q: Is there parking?
A: There is a public car park/picnic area & small lay by at the top of Okeford hill, this the conventional place to park during non event days. Once parked, you then cycle up the bridleway approx 500 mtrs into the park. If we have an uplift or event running you can park in the farmer’s field next to the main entrance to the park.

Q: What sort of bike do I need?
A: Any style of Mountain Bike is suitable to ride at the park – hardtail, XC, freeride, Downhill etc – it really depends on what you want to ride. Please make sure your bike is in good condition with working front & rear brakes.

Q: Do I need a helmet?
A: YES YES and YES! You MUST have a helmet to ride within the park. What style is your choice but we can’t recommend enough the use of full face helmets.

Q: Do I need to wear body amour?
A: There is no policy for riders to wear body armour – however we strongly recommend that you do. The soil contains lots of sharp flint - some simple leg & arm protection would be the minimum. Full upper body armour with a back protector is strongly advised – it can make the difference between carrying on riding after a fall or a visit to A&E!

Q: Will someone be there so I can pay for a day pass?
A: We are always up there during the weekends and most times during the week. Alternatively you pay for your day pass online.

Q: Do I need a day pass if I've paid to ride the uplift?
A: The day pass is included in the ticket price of the uplift.

Q: How long is the push up route?
A: It’s a good 20 mins push up – its steep then it gets steeper! Please note that you are not allowed to push up (or ride down) the uplift track.

Q: Can I camp overnight?
A: You can camp ONLY on event/race weekends. Alternatively check out the accommodation link on the info section for local campsites.

Q: Is there any local B+B's?
A: there are several B+B’s within a few miles of the park. One is situated directly at the bottom of the park in view of the hill! Check the info section of the website.

Q: Do you sell food/drinks?
A: We have a range of hot/cold drinks and snacks available most days. Most weekends and always at events including uplifts and races we have hot food (locally produced hotdogs, home burgers and mums cake!) available all day.

Q: What does the insurance cover?
A: Purchasing a day pass/membership gives you a basic third party cover through British cycling. Using personal insurance through the BC, CTC or other is also advisable.

Q: I've paid for a day pass/uplift/membership online - what now?
A: Once you’ve paid online for a day pass or uplift/race you’ll receive a conformation email. If possible please print this off and bring it along with you on the day. If you’ve joined up as member we’ll be sending you out your membership pack within the week.

Q: Can I hire a bike/armour?
A: We don’t have our own hire fleet however Torico Performance Bikes who are based 5 mins away from the park in Sturminster Newton have a full range of demo bikes including full suspension downhill rigs and will also be able to provide helmets and body armour visit www.torico.co.uk

Q: Do you offer private uplifts?
A: Yes a private uplift service is available at almost any time. Please check the links on the uplift section of the website.

Q: Can you give me directions?
A: There are downloadable & printable maps under the info section of the website.

Hmmm. I know you want the park to be all inclusive, but having ridden some of the trails myself on my ti hardtail, I wouldn't send a begininer down any of them after the fire road. I've seen some of the bad riding at trail centres in Wales and Scotland, and I wouldn't say the park is accessable to all. If you can't ride the black trail at a trail centre, you won't be able to ride the park without improvement.

Load of rubbish.
At the round I raced there were kids about 12ish, they were obviously beginners, yes they got down slowly but they all made it down. There are chicken lines for everything and they are do-able by everybody.

Kids will throw themselves off anything. I would also suggest they were all riding pretty slack bikes. If you send an afan trail mincer down those tracks on an xc bike he won't reach the bottom without a: walking most of it or b: falling off a lot. What I'm saying is that a DHer's idea of "easy" isn't the same as an xc'ers.

That's just science.

Strictly speaking there is no XC route (yet) but fair one, there is plenty of XC riding if you know where to look. My point is, if you say "XC bikes" and "Any skill level" people will be dissapointed if they can't ride it. I've met a few of the "All mountain" brigade standing around at the top wondering where the easier stuff is. To be fair, the hints are there in the pictures and content of the website, but a lot of people travel to sites on word of mouth without being aware who the trails are aimed at.

Either way, it's just an opinion.
