Altura Trail - Whinlatter

Just got back from it, prety cool loop, a lot of decent downhill parts, plenty of stuff to ride. Done it on my DH rig and full face! wasnt very fun uphill but was sweet on the downhills. Im just so buzzin after the ride up there i felt id tell you all! haha enjoyed it so much it made me want to buy a lightish all-mountain style bike to rag around, and this is coming from a guy who rides his DH bike for everything (poor!)

Has anyone else rode it? or any other 'trail tales' that bring back good memories?

Yeh ridden it a few times, both on my XC bike and on the DH bike. I can tell you that the final descent is much better on a lighter, more nimble and flickable bike! Although you can just go all out on a big rig mind... The descent just seams to go on forever though doesn't it?!

You heard what they're doing on the other side of the road though?  Wink

its awsome did it the first week it opened in the pissing down rain the decent is pretty good with some good oppertunity to whipp out some tricks.

yea those hips and berms right at the end are damn fun. descent isnt that long like, a good length i thought! the switchbacks about a third of the way through the loop were really fun. possibly my faveourite part.

Yea i know what you mean about the last bit on a big bike, i can just imagine it being a lot easier to throw into everything. Big bike just plows through it lol.

Oh and roost, is that a sliver enduro in the pic? with a dhx 5 air amd 36 floats (i think)? if so do you work at cyclewise?

No it's an Orange 5, I work in Biketreks in Ambleside so have access to all the demo bikes Wink

Think the Enduro belongs to Craig there - next time you're up there though have a word with him at the shop if he's around, him and Rich own/run Cyclewise and know all you need to know about the future plans for Whinlatter - let me tell you now though that Whinlatter's gonna get a whole load better!

I loved it, right up there with whites level at afan. The switchbacks in the middle are great. The last few berms were a little off putting for me, not used to seeing what appears when you're riding to be a 500ft drop if you wash out over the top Embarrassed

Roo, i know what you mean! on our first run we walked up the firetrack next to the final section and saw a bunch of guys about to start it so we followed them, Coming round the high line on the berms was fine but i tried a low one and threw the back end out on the shale. walking back up i realised how big a drop it is lol. Good fun at the time. Like you said the switchbacks are class.

How does a 3.5km long descent full of jumps, berms and tables sound?!!

Sounds good, I know a few people who have been and have heard mixed reviews.

About time there was some decent stuff built in Cumbria, Grizedale is a bit of a let down.

What are the jumps like? I heard they are just little table tops that you hit flat out which sounds abit whack

Yeah the tables are deffo designed for with the XC riders in mind, however the last bit with the hips etc is probably the most fun, nothing big at all, just fun to ride.

If you think it's going to be like Glentress then you'll be disapointed, but if you just wanna have a quick blast out on a fun trail then yeah it's good fun

defo, and half the riders there were rolling the jumps anyway.

ooooooo 3.5km descent, sounds class! better be more DH/Freeride orientated!

rode the last descent on my dark and did the loop on my housemates 5, was so much better on the five... only problem was the tabletops... nearly killed myself on those as i completely missed the landings on all of them... there a bit short..

but great fun.
only problem was the midges at the carpark...

man up ed midges come on, its warmer than birmingham up there mate.

i wouldn't worry about making the cyclewise shop dirty they never bother and it is imaculatly clean. not managed to make biketreks dirty yet even though im in there enough.

the bottom sections gona have a mega decent but that means one thing, a mega climb too.

*puuuusssshhhhh* unless of course ive got myself a nice little play bike by then Smiley haha i can dream! some of those cubes in cyclewise were taking my fancy! very nice.
