Perhaps tesco will be bringing out a 'finest' range of bikes - where DW link is REALLY going next year...

I havn't been on for yonksssss but saw that picture in tescos direct as well - i seem to remeber argos doing a similar thing about a year ago.

The unfortunate thing is, kids get hold of those sorts of "£180 mountainbikes" from halfords, tesco, local shops etc and say "yeah i've got a mountainbike" to all their friends.

Then 2 years later they say again "yeah its a mountainbike" but next a friend rolls up on his iron horse laughing at him. FINALLY the kid wants a new bike/a "proper mountain bike" and the parent fails to understand why a new bike is needed when the kid got a "£180 mountain bike" from the local bike shop which is definately an MTB in their eyes because the salesman said so and he/she would never lie to them.......

.....or was that just me when i was younger?  Sad  Roll Eyes

Why do a lot of sub £300 bikes from the likes of apollo etc muddyfox etc still use threaded headsets/headtube combos? is it cheaper?

Would it not be easier to manufacture?

i dont see why it would be cheeper. There plentys of headsets that are cheap enough for them to spec on a bike at that price and it would save them having to thread the frame, they just need a smooth polished surface instead which is much easier to creat than a thread that lines up to a close enough tolorance.

Although i guess they both end up being a similar cost as they are probably all mass produced by one or two manufactures and re-labled dependant on brand

What?

What kind of threaded headsets have you been running?

Reason they're cheap is because of the sheer volume they are produced in, nothing more...

I think its also got somthing to do with the fact that unknowlegable people like to raise their bars and all that shite, and dont quite get the reason behind using stem stack spacers  Undecided the customer then replies "wtf i got to buy spacers to raise the bloody handlebars!?" or somthing similar.
