do policemen have it in for us bikers?
« on: July 18, 2008, 13:07:00 PM »

the other day me and a mate were street riding in a local town to us and we stopped to get a drink and a police car pulled up near us. we waited for a while amd as soon a we set off the guy got out the car and walked towards us.

we just carried on biking down the road (not actually doing any street riding at this point) and as soon as i poped up the curb into a manual hwe shouted oi, and then came over and told us to stop ruining the town by biking all over it.

that may not seem like much but considering this is one of the most chav infested towns in the UK and people get stabbed in that area i think a few manuals on pavements is hardly 'ruining the town.'

has anyone else had encounters with police like this? or was it just me an my mate that were unlucky to be in the wrong place at the wrong time?

It's an offence to cycle on the pavement, end of.

There doing there job, sure there are axe murder'ers roaming around in chav suits but the fact that you were doing something wrong in the eyes of the law, they decided to act

Exactly what i was going to say, and if there were people about, (not necessarily on the pavement, but around or near by) then they get particularly stressy about it.

Stay on the road/dismount for pavement sections/pedstrian zones if they are around next time.

Only experience I've had with them is that they stopped me for not having lights in the middle of a winter's night. I decided not to complain hehe.

Cycling on the pavement is illegal. But sometimes its the safest place to cycle. PLus so many people do it in towns and cities, which im guessing is where you were riding, it could be seen as slightly picking on i guess.

But oftent police men dont like 'extreme' sports in public places, same problem when i used to skate, or even just old my board and not riding it. I would get asked to move along or 'Are you causing any agro' lol.

At the end of the day, you were in the wrong.  Deal with it and move on.

That officer might've been a grumpy b'tard, or he might just have thought sod it I'm not gonna let them off this time...who cares and what does it matter.  If you saw him following you, more fool you for hopping on the pavement.

As said, riding on the pavement is illegal.  Maybe he could have dealt with it a little more tactfully, but he was right.

yer, i supose i wasn't meant to be on the pavement but there were no pedestrians and i was only hopping on to let cars passed and straight off again once the road was clear. he may have just been in a bad mood at the time i spose.

My friend got a £30 on the spot fine for doing a stair gap and was told if he was caught again his bike could be seized.

Sounds harsh, but when you think about it, any old woman could have gone to walk up the stairs and he coulud have plowed her down.

The policeman was just doing his job, 'protecting the public'
