a few friends and I were street riding in Co-op car park.

weren't doing any harm, just using the wall and ramp to practice roll-backs. we weren't getting in the way of cars or making any noise, and a woman that worked there complained to the police, they were there within 20mins of us arriving... unbelievable they weren't there within an hour when i got mugged... i guess they were just responding to a complaint, i don't hold anything against them although i gave them an earful when they arrived.

I have not posted on this forum for a good few years, and now I am getting back into riding after a few years of being so busy i didnt have time, this may seam irrelavent to this topic but the reason i didnt have time was because joined the met police, I would just like to point out a few things, (I realise that I may be biased in this respect but anyway i will say what i have to)

Firstly when talking about the bleep test of 5.4 this is an inital test, when you get through this (in the met every force is different) you have 5 weeks of fitness, ie fighting, running, protecting yourself, circuits etc, which should bring your fitness up (this is a pass or fail test) when you finish your training and get out on borough unfortunatly there is no mandatory fitness test unless you want to specialise eg. firearms, flying squad etc.

After this you have a further 12 weeks learning law and the baiscs of policework, with pass or fail exams every 2 weeks and pass or fail practical exams every two weeks also, this is very intense and as i have done the uni thing i can say a lot harder than anything i ever did at uni, the pressure is intense, there is so much to read and learn.

Now as Iam in the job and as people have said you do get muppets in every job, the police is no different, for example in london the met police is the biggest employer (around 35000 officers and another 55000 civilian staff working for the police) and the majority are hard working and want to actually try and make a difference.

I understand that people may be annoyed at how long it takes to get to places, but when calls come out if we are all busy dealing with other ones, no one can deal, but trust me when i say we work flat out to try and get to all of them, (for example I have worked a 12 hour shift a few times and not even had a chance to stop for food it has been so busy and there would be an uproar if that was the case in a private business) I Know this because i have been on response team (the ones who answer all the 999 calls and forms the basis of police work) for over a year now and it is hard sometimes.

It may sound like a bit of a rant but I just wanted you to have a view on what its like from the inside!

thanks for posting that base-biker.

Obviously there are a lot of hard working fellas like you about.

But the ineptness of the police force as a whole in not about the individual officer. Even though there are c**nts, these c**nts are a lot better than ones you would get in many other countries.

Its about policy & lack of numbers forcing officers to do an inadequate job.

Cyclists realy get a harsh end of the stick. Bicycle theft for example is completely written off as a genuine crime, when it is in fact one of the most significant especially for young bikers like most of the members here.

Its often the first experience as a victim of crime, often as a mugging which is not dealt with at all and leaves people bitter and with a lack of faith in the police.

Police in big citied like london are now actually activeley runnign programmes to stop, search & fine cyclists for completely trivial matters. If you dont stop you get chased, beat down and put in a cell. If they happen to be armed I would not want to think of the consequences.

Again, this is due to policy. These particular ones really provide a setting for trigger happy/macho c**nts to thrive.

Yeah some are ok, me and a friend found a area of land which was in a industrial estate, it had been ripped up by diggers and then dumped into piles of soil so we went along with out shovels built a few jumps and a pump track. we could see that a few people at other buildings were getting annoyed by us being there but we were not doing nothing wrong towards them so we carried on, then all of a sudden a police car turned. they got out and said having a good time, we said yeah thanks and they then asked us to show them what we can do. so they just sat on the bonnet of the car soaking up the sun shine while watching us ride our bikes. It must have been at least 30-45mins before they had to leave. The best thing was the people that rang them came over when they arrived to make us look like fools but when they said lets see what you ca do the peoples faces were a picture  Tongue

completely written off? if it happens away from CCTV with no suspect there is only so much we can do, we aren't miracle workers

Its often the first experience as a victim of crime, often as a mugging which is not dealt with at all and leaves people bitter and with a lack of faith in the police.

most are mugging? stats to support or random assumption?

Police in big citied like london are now actually activeley runnign programmes to stop, search & fine cyclists for completely trivial matters.

I can't speak for the MET but BTP have no such active programme and i would be very surprised if the MET do. If you are breaking the law though what do you expect, just don't do it!

If you dont stop you get chased, beat down and put in a cell. If they happen to be armed I would not want to think of the consequences.

I have experienced bicycle theft more than once, as have many of my friends.

The standard procedure from the police is to ask you if you want a crime ref no for insurance purposes as that is the only thing you shall get out of making a statment.

I gave the police the full name, street address, school, & class of a thief. And no action was taken no matter how much I pestered them. That was when I was 14, my first experience of bike theft which was a mugging.

Next, I said bike thefts from young people are OFTEN muggings not most

And I think you will find if you go and actually look for yourself, there are many programmes in place to stop & search a number of groups in london, this includes cyclists which they are giving on the spot fines and general hassle over nothing.

And lastly, if youve never been on the receiving hand of a bunch of bored/violent coppers, got a beat down & been put in a cell for absolutley no reason. I shall kindly ask you to shut the f**k up.

I have experienced bicycle theft myself a number of occasions, that was my first 2 interactions with the police.
I would ask why you think the crime number for insurance and nothing else is the only thing you will get from a statement but i imagine like in the last post you will be on the offense immediately whilst providing very little answer or insight.
Unfortunately we can't just go and arrest someont because you say they stole something, we use this thing you may or may not heard of called EVIDENCE?
You will find BTP has a scheme in place targetted at cyclists, its aim is to educate cyclists about security and to encourage them to join the bike registry. I am in London 6 days a week and have seen nothing negative as far as fines and general hassle, but like i said before, if its a law and you break it what do you expect?
Why would my bored/violent copper colleagues beat me down when we could find an innoecent cyclist to beat down and put in a cell for absolutely no reason?
I find this very hard to believe because thats not how it works. Perhaps you can elaborate on the situation?

Beleive it or not,

some of us are unlucky enough to get a lot of hassle of the police. Id rather not go into details of my personal encounters on a public forum.

Here is an example of some of the spots in the holborn area where the police have been stopping & searching all the cyclists they can:

Theobalds Road j/w Lambs Conduit Street/Red Lion Street
Theobalds Road j/w Proctor Street
Theobalds Road j/w Grays Inn Road
Bloomsbury Way j/w Theobalds Road/Southampton Row
Proctor Street j/w High Holborn
High Holborn j/w Drury Lane
High Holborn j/w Kingsway/Southampton Row
Kingsway j/w Lincolns Inn/Great Queen Street
Pedestrian crossing outside Pendrels Oak Public House in High Holborn
Pedestrian crossing outside the Renaissance Hotel High in High Holborn

They are working in different areas obviously, but this is just a list I happened to come across. There are obviously occassions where officers (often on bikes!) will target & chase down other cyclists.

so the fact they're riding around on the bike they stole off you isn't evidence then  Roll Eyes

i didn't say he said he was riding it  Undecided

what i meant was, you said about needing evidence, i know someone who had his bikes stolen, one of which has been spotted numerous times being ridden by scallys. so, is the fact they're riding it not evidence enough that they stole it or AT LEAST that they're handling stolen goods? because one time the police were phones numerous times by many different people, including the mum of the kid, and they couldn't give a toss, and did nothing about it.

Our local police arent that bothered by us, true at the start of last winter they were pretty hard, warning us with fines but with a bit of co-operation they realised we meant no harm and were quite happy with us riding around in street locations.
Shows that with a bit of cooperation goes along way.

i mean, one night when me and a mate were messing around in a carpark at around 8 ish, it was winter so it was dark and not very buisy, 2 officers come up and ask us where are lights were, we took out our phones and put the light on them and simply said to them along the lines of, well, here they are. obviously in a nice jokey mannar, they laughed and we got into a general convosation about whatever it was we were talking about.

Bondage is key  Tongue Roll Eyes

So yeah, police are not a problem for us. They also come to us for info/help as they know were more than happy to assist them in a case involving chaves   Cheesy

Yehh, I remember this night Chris before we encounted a couple of officers patrolling the area we just got off the bikes walked past them crossing over to the other side and as soon as we passed then we made it down the rest of the hill on the bike, I mean if they were bothered they would have shouted for us to stop and probably fined us. I guess its just a case of what type of policemen your area hire.

Bondage is key  Tongue Roll Eyes

Takes a new meaning, to being 'beat down in a cell' Wink

On the topic of coppers, I've been a victim of crime - 3 bikes nicked in total - and nothing done about them.  Guess it was too much effort, to go on too little evidence at the time.

Overall, I think they do a damn good job at keeping the peace, considering how overcrowded our little island is, and how much friction between cultures happens every day.
