If youre not putting out, Im going riding

Well thank you very much raceface...
« on: July 19, 2008, 14:48:50 PM »

So i had a thread a bit ago about my seized diabolus crankbolt, and how i was struggling to shift it. Well after another 3 or 4 tries, utilising your suggestions (torque driver) its still buggered on there and check out what its done to my 8mm allen key, twisted the thing! thats how much sodding force was going through it!

So yea im pretty damn peeved at this as now the crankbolt 8mm slot is rounded off making my attempts to loosen it useless.

Id tried everything, just the allen key, used a huge pole as a lever, hit it with a biiiig mallet, torque driver and id ran out of ideas! grrrr but now its fecked for good and its really shite to ride as the bearings are shot at and the cranks hardly spin! i cant understand how its gotten this bad though, it had new bearings in january and it was coveredwith grease when it was put on.

Now unless any of you have any plans im gonna have to either drill it out or cut the arms off! and i dont have any cash at all to spend on new cranks!

Thoughts?

if your willing to buy a new crankbolt then i have a solution.

go to somewhere like makro, or a DIY sort of place. ask at the till for something that removes screws and the likes. sometimes theres brands called easyout or screwremover.

all it simply does is drills into the little B*gger thats stuck, then enabling you to get it out.
seems the only way i can think of getting it out because youve rounded it off.

hope ive helped

Thanks

I'd have my doubts about one of those working here. If the bolt is so stuck that its bending a good quality allen key then I doubt an e-z-out will do it. Sadly.

Firaly sure this happened to someone on here a while ago, and it led to the use of the good old hacksaw, i think the phrase was "just saw it off and go buy a crank that wasnt designed by a 5 year old".

Try to heat the bolt up, then hit it with a wooden mallet or similar then it might undo!

Worth a try, if not drill it out or cut the head of the bolt off with an angle grinder

Steel bolt? Weld another 8mm key to it.

it was me that had to cut Steeeev's Diablous cranks off his Mtn Cycle, pics were on here a year or two back

Diablous are b*stard cranks to fit and remove, especially when the mounting hardware becomes mangled

I would personally cut them off using a hacksaw through the non-driveside crank spacers, and get some Shimano SLX cranks which are just coming into stock, and should be less than £100 including the HT2 bottom bracket

I'm giving the Raceface Atlas FRs a go after years using Saints, mainly for the slightly longer axle, as I use 28T inner rings and frame clearance can be an issue. I found that the bolt is a bitch to tighten, let alone get off again. I had to invest in a Park HT-8 hex tool just to get them on! The handle gives it a hell of a lot more grip than standard hex wrenches, so that may be worth a try?

i would use cutting them off as a last resort , if your not too fussed about the finish on the cranks , get a blow torch on them and try to expand the area around splines.

yea a blow torch sounds like a good idea, ill try that next. although i dont have a blowtorch! any alternatives haha.

as for replacing them ill have a look on here, ill probs be able to pick up some saints cheapish, id like something lighter ideally as ive wanted to replace the diabolus for lighter cranks for ages but i doubt ill get something in 83mm bb 165mm length thats not a saint or diabolus for under 100.

Safe to say i wont be using raceface again.

Have you tried soaking it in oil then hammering in a torx key? Might aswell try it before you go cutting it off or heating it.

If you are doing that to an allenkey the hammering in a torx bit idea wont work, just make it worse. If the bolt is still tight in the axle then heating wont make any difference either. You are going to have to destroy the bolt so its not holding the crank anymore then you could try heating it. Even then I doubt you would be able to get enough of a difference in expansion to loosen off the splines enough to get them off. These are square edge splines so when you heat the interface up the outer edge loosens off but as the alloy splines on the crank expand into the slower expanding steel splines on the axle, it actually makes them a tighter fit.

Good luck!

I ended up buying a set of Raceface a few months back just becuase I couldnt get hold of a set of saints within the time I wanted. I really regret it, they just arent on par with the saints fitting wise. I struggle to get the crank bolt off regularly. I've never had that problem though!

Steel bolt? Weld another 8mm key to it.

yep do that or araldyte(sp?) it on and then you can use as much force and leverage as you can to get it off.
