It is rather late though!

I'm kinda stuck with this Raceface stem.  There's not enough material for most common methods.  And I'm not willing to try my ideas out on a safety critical component worth £40!

I doubt you'll find a cost effective solution my good man.  Sorry

Smithy

looks like we are both in the same boat.
Im not sure what to do really. Ill probably just try to tap it anyway. Doesnt matter if it goes wrong.

Whack a pic up so we can see if it's safe or not then!

Helicoils are pretty easy to do. I've done 3 now. And the 1st one was on a nearly new set of 08 888. Drill, tap and insert. When I get in from work I'll check to see how the drill bit for it goes through the hole for an M6 bolt.

Well you cant really see the threadness :L

It just doesnt tighten and bits of thread are left on the stem bolts.
Annoying really  Angry

Im now deciding if there is any way to bodge it. But its such a crucial safety part i dont know if i want too   Undecided

Well I think its fair to say you've learnt your lesson on this one.. and before anyone uses this thread to prove a point against Deity, i've got one of their 25.4mm stems fitted to the front of my bike for the past two years and havent had a problem.

Personally for the sake of £45 I'd just get a new stem, we all make mistakes.. just be a bit more careful with the other one!

yeah, i think it was going wrong from the second i had it, the fact one of the bolts was a bit rounded, i should have taken it back there and then.

And im not doubting it anymore, im putting it down to a mistake on my part.
I may try to Helicoil, but Miffy has explained that i wont have enough material to make it work.
Although, they did have some serious issues with cranks snapping.
But there will be teething problems in the early days of any company...

If you Helicoil it you WILL have enough material as you should be able to use the original size bolt.... You'd need to do it from the opposite side to the bolt head.

If you drill it out and re-tap it you will need a bigger bolt and may have problems with the counterbore.

READ the info people are kindly giving you!

I am reading the info!
WHat the problem is, is that there is a big set in for the bolt, which is exactly the same size as the bolt head, so to drill it out id have to drill out this set in bit.

It will be a squeeze to do  Sad

And drilling through the non bolt head side could be tricky aswell..

Unless you have a proper lathe setup I would not try drilling out the head. You might be lucky and get a big enough drill but through the head-hole to get a helicoil bit and tap in there, but TBH I doubt it looking at it. I assume you cant get to the thread from 'inside', ie, with the bar removed? If not, I'd seriously just chalk it up to experiance and ditch it. Buy yourself a higher rise one next time too and ditch a few spacers Smiley Hope do a 25degree 50mm stem which would be nice (but please don't over tighten the bolts on it! Wink). Good luck Smiley

Yeah that photos nicked off my site, taken when I first got the bike with a ridiculous number of spacers so I could get the height right. The design of the stem makes it pretty impossible to save it, just get a new one and dont be so hamfisted!
