dirt jump building
« on: August 02, 2008, 13:56:26 PM »

well at our local woods theres never really been a dirt jump thats worked perticulary well.
but this summer we have made one and yep yet again it hasnt turned out to jump very well as we all this year really wanted to get some tricks sorted.

i think there could be a number of problems:

the gap is to big so u have to concentrate to much on the gap and jumping before being able to do a trick in the air.

The take off isn't steep enough so doesnt kick you up enough giving you more height and hang time to do trick but if it was steeper you would go so far.

the landing we have different riders like my self i prefer more freeridey jump with a more mellow landing then i have mate who prefer a steep landing to carry speed and they say its smoother on a hardtail.

what are you thoughts on these and there are some pics below for you to look at you can get an idea of the size of the jump and gap to my bike next to the take off but they arn't great quality as i took them on my phone.

ide say extend the landing ramp so you dont have to focus on so much geting the distance also bring the ramp a little closer. try making the kicker that your jumping off wider so you have a bigger area to hit instead of a thin patch and if you arent geting enough hight bring the landing ramp closer and make them both a little steeper also try making the jumps before ( or berms or what evers there) a little better because this means your going to be carying more speed into the jump theirfore making it easier.

hope this helps. Paul Smiley

its a straight run in with two pump lumps which dnt realy work to well Tongue i think our problem is that if u go to fast you over shoot and if you go to slow you case the landing so i think as you said we need to move the landing back.
any thing else we should consider how is the transition on the take off?

if these pumps on the run in dont work then try making them work these will give you loads more speed and set you up better than if they dont work and you loose your speed and loose your balance, or try and make them into a small double or something simelar and make the run in better

think we will try that but with the jump theres a fine line between jumping and landing on the landing and casing or over shooting.

extend the landing inwards a little so that even if you jump and would normaly case it you wownt.

         /|   | \
____/  |_|   \__     sort of like that if you get me make the top flat so you arent having to jump higher to get onto the landing but its longer so if you dont make it your just going to land on the flat. but make it more rounded off obviously and also wach out the landing isnt to steep that if you land back wheel on the flat you dont go over the bars.
(sory for the crapy drawing to tired to do a decent one in paint but you get the jist)
and if your overshooting it make the landing longer.

cheers that really helped its just all the riders want something different i wouldnt mind doing what you said and extending the landing inwards so i can try trick and no worry to much about how far i jump just on the height i get.
but others are happy with a big gap and others want a steep landing which i personally hate.

the jump is just all over too small,

you need to extend the gap, make both take off and landing a lot taller and a lot wider, and if you are wanting to learn tricks, turn it into a stepup.

bigger and steeper lander and kicker. and get more speed into it so you get more time in the air to learn tricks

As said above, make it overall a bigger jump. Make the take off higher and wider, cant really see how steep it is in the pictures but it doesn't look to bad.
You say you overshoot the jump sometimes, if the take off is bigger then this shouldn't happen. If the pump bumps aren't doing much then take them away, otherwise thats another thing to distract you, the jump isnt that big you could clear that with a flat run in. If its for learning tricks on then a soft landing not hugely steep would probably be better. If its the first jump in a line of jumps your building then you want it steep and higher than it is now.
