the pacman ghost would look rediculous as the wheels spins!

although the back wheel would look pretty cool!

I dont think they are stationary, isn't the pattern created as the wheel spins?

surely if it was as the wheel spinned, the one on the front wheel would be upside down all the time

or they put the thing on the wheel the wrong way round so they could turn it up side down and make it easier to get a pic of the wheels spinning Wink

Surely the bottom always faces down. If I'm not mistaken there is one strip of lights, eg along a spoke, and they turn on & off at the correct time to create the patten.
I've seen similar sticks you can wave around and they write a message, like this thing:
