Local Bike shop
« on: July 31, 2008, 17:50:18 PM »

I know we should all support our local bike shop but the ones around me are a joke. This is more a bit of a rant.

I thought since I was going past them on the way to inners on sat I'd pop in and get some High Rollers and saint brake pads.

First I phoned Alpine bikes in Innerleithen. No high rollers and no saint pads. I thought as High Rollers were pretty popular tyres and with the DH track a stones throw away they would have some.

I then phoned Edinburgh Bike coop who said they could order me in High Rollers at £28 for 2.5's but it could take 3-5 days as it wasn't worth them keeping a stock. The brakes pads weren't popular enough to be held in stock either and could be ordered in at £15 a set. I would have been willing to pay the extra if they had had them but no way am I waiting longer and paying more.

So from now on the will only see me If the repair I need done to my bike is something I really can't do myself.

Rant over

Just needed to vent some anger.

If you ask your lbs to order you in parts they should be able to do that for you as they obviously cant stock everything.
But i would have thought they would stock the high rollers, every proper bike shop ive visited has had a nice shelf of maxxis tyres to choose from.

Yeah they could order them in but it would cost more and take longer than if I ordered it myself online.

But your average local bike shop wont have a warehouse full of stock and be able to bulk order products and then sell them on for cheaper.
Your lbs will probably be more expensive but if you use it all the time you never know you may get a special discount

Yeah I am willing to pay more if I get them then and there. It's also not as if I'm looking for unusual things.

you phoned 2 chain stores.... neither are really "local bike shops"

they may not have had saint pads but i bet they had xt brakes pads which are the same

and you wouldnt keep stock of maxxis tires if you saw the hoops you have to jump through to get em ....if you dont want to buy 200 quid of tires then the importers aint interested .....

shoulda phoned stevie deas at icycles !

Also on the maxxis tyres, have you seen how many different variations of each tyre there is? If your LBS stocked 2 of every kind of high roller thats at least 16 downhill tyres not to mention the various cross country variations you do. So that shop then has £448 of maxxis high rollers (which is under RRP, they should be £29.99). Then think that some of them tyres wont sell because this week sam hill is'nt running his front tyre in 60A backwards and in a slightly trimed 2.5 and as "trail_rat" said, unless you buy reciulous amounts of tyres, the margins aernt that good.

The brake pads is pretty poor tho, they should at least have had the Xt pads in which if the guy you spoke to was worth his wage would have told you to run them.

I can back that up as Trail Rat will tell you. I was moaning about both companies last week I think when I was at work. Both are a pain to deal with. I needed a load of Royal clothing for stock and for customers and they had nothing.

If i have heard correctly in the past, MMA (Maxxis distrib in UK) also supply all the Euro countries that don't have their own distribs. for Maxxis, so UK shops are competing with Euro distribs. for Maxxis tire products, 661 armour and Royal clothing  Roll Eyes

we find that we end up with large back orders of Maxxis and 661 armour, and then floods of tires and body armour arriving 2-3 months later....and then we can't get the exact ones people want

its a bit of a lottery for sure, and not conducive to good business

tom, you should know thats not their fault.

We need and want for stock alot of oddysey twisted pedals and pads but the distributor cant get any... thats not their fault, thats the guys at head office where they control how much they produce in the east.. Same with fishers, its not their fault.

I can see where you are coming from, its rare to find a shop nowadays that has a cool selection of parts in, just to have a look at.
I mean, Freedom bikes near me has a cabinet at the desk, and i love having a rummage through it and looking at the parts and things. and its hard to find shops like it nowadays.

Im sure alot of you will agree, its quite fun just looking through new parts, not having bought them, its just fun to look at the stuff and get a feel for weights and stuff.
