"Me" proof cameras
« on: July 31, 2008, 23:34:45 PM »

when i take pictures i dont take em for the enjoyment of the picture taking , i take em so i can remember in years to come where ive been what ive done ... so looking for a decent point and shoot that takes SD cards (cause i have 4gb kicking about and im going traveling by bike for 4 months in countries where weather is very variable)

so looking at these "waterproof" "shockproof" cameras from the likes of olympus any one had any experiance with them ?

looking to replace my broken and battery hungry samsung a7

if they aint no cope then recomend me another compact that doesnt eat batterys , relitively sturdy , takes SD cards and can either be charged from usb (i have a freeloader solar charger) or just takes standard AA batterys. dont need any more than 5-7 mega pixels would prefer a better lense than a mega number of pixels current cameras 7 and gives fine pictures ! budget is varible .....but nothing mega though and certainly dont need an SLR .....

http://www.olympus.co.uk/consumer/29_13781.htm

my mate has this one and he really likes it. not a bad price and does actually withstand most things that he gives it. for example he lands on it quite a bit when he has it in his backpack and its still working now! plus the advert is quite cool

having read into them a bit more since posting , it has transpired that to charge it you must take the battery out and place in charge .... about as much use as a chocolate teapot to me as ill break the charger in my panniers and also i wont have mains to charge it , so must be chargable from usb !

check this one out.. I got one as a replacement for my old camera...

http://www.cameras.co.uk/reviews/nikon-coolpix-p5100.cfm

It is the top of the line coolpix, and retail is £300, but they are kicking around for £150 ish at the moment... Thing is there are lower ones in the range ie 8mb but they are not that much cheaper, and it takes and SD card...

magnesium body so it is tough, I take mine riding / boarding etc and it has stood up to a beating...

As for the photos they are spot on... the pre-set settings (macro/sports/night etc) work real well... and as such makes it great for just point, shoot, and great good results.

As for the battery I would try and get a P5000 or the P50 one of those takes AA's... getting a USB charger will be hard......
