Little Scare..
« on: August 03, 2008, 20:40:18 PM »

Well me and a couple of mates went out to ride Corsham BMX Track the other week. Rode for a bit (have to say awesome fun) and it pi**ed it down with rain so stopped for a break. Anyways passed out from dehydration with funky colors on the go, loss of sight, loss of hearing and Rob's, my riding buddy's voice sounding very deepcompared to usual. If you haven't experienced dehydration it's not pleasant, make sure you keep sipping fluids when your riding people and dont make the silly mistake I made.
Anyways, Wednesday night woke up feeling rough; Headache, Aching all over, Sweaty, Flushed and a temperature of 40ish. Whacked a load of neurofen down my neck (recommended dosage) and hoped to improve over the Thursday. Thursday came and no improvement and in the evening I started to deteriorate with symptoms listed above. Mum rang NHS helpline and they told her to get me into the nearest hospital quick. Went to Trowbridge and they carried out some tests. After being seen by a Doctor and her colleague they quickly referred me to Bath RUH as they thought I might of had Meningitis with all the symptoms of it bar the rash. Went to Bath where they told me they wanted to do blood tests and a spinal puncture, no thanks....
In the end they didn't as I appeared to be improving so they kept me in on the adolescents ward and monitored me all night. I was discharged at 10:30 on the Friday morning.Turns out it was a Viral infection and a bit of sun stroke to top it off, still recovering but nearly there.
Lesson learned from me, No I couldn't of helped the Viral Infection, Yes I could/should of been more cautious out in that blazing sun. Take it easy.

Jesus man close call!

The other thing to bear in mind is that any from of painkiller ie, Nurofen etc is designed to raise you core tempurature to fight the infection/illness so if it is a hot day or just generally riding bear this in mind guys. Drink plenty and have alot of rest stops. Even lemsip does the same I didnt realise myself till somone at work almost cooked from the inside from it.

Lucky for him it wasnt a long run. Smiley

was in exactly the same boots as you mate. had a viral infection, tempreture over 40, vomitting blood! and had it on my birthday on holiday!! took me in and imediatley sent me for the lumber puncture, and i'll tell you it is the most agony i have ever been in! especially as they had to do it twice as the first time didnt go right! did you not feel a bit dodgy before you went out riding?

i caught a savage infection once, whenever i sat down i'd be, if i stood up, id be sick.
I was sick about 30 times a day LITERALLY! And it went on for 2 weeks.
Ended up not eating for 10 days as i couldnt keep anything down, and just had to have special salts to keep my minerals up. even then half of them would come back up. it was awful, and in the summer holidays!

And i had a mate who got Sunstroke at sportsday (dont laugh) and he just fell on the floor. He was carted off to hospital.

Ive been very careful since, and if i start feeling too hot, i go and rest for a bit. And keep drinking!

dont take this as a personal attack but if you were vomiting 30 times a day you woud barely have been alive, and shouldve been in hospital.

Just out of interest had you been drinking monster?

After the last nps 4x I had pretty much the same thing that lasted over a week, the doc gave me some re-hydration solution and was considering putting me on a drip. Odd thing was I'd been drinking a lot anyway, I'd had 3-4 big bottles of water, several lucazade and gatorades but also had a lot of monster since it was free.

I know caffeine dehydrates you but I drink a lot of energy drinks normaly (red bull/relentless) and the only thing different that weekend from other races was the monster Undecided

But yea drink and don't just drink water, you need to keep your electrolytes balanced so sports drinks help (Oddly Lucazade doesn't help with that)

Yeahh I was given paracetamol  to regulate my internal body temperature, the neurofen was for my throbbing headache.

Mann I'm glad I didn't have the spinal/lumber puncture doesn't sound too pleasant. No I was as fit as a fiddle before i went out riding that's why it came as such as shock. Not a good start to the holidays...

we went to a G.P as soon as we realized it wasnt just a few times being sick.
They said that if i went to the hospital they would say the same and probably wouldnt keep me in as there wasnt any special treatment other than a sick bowl and some pills.

So they gave my parents info on how to look after me, gave me a prescription and told me if it didnt get better in a few days to go to A&E.

And it was at least 20 times a day, but it got to a stage where there was nothing left!
But yeah, i felt like i was hardly alive at times.

None. Water. They aren't ideal, you shouldn't be relying on caffeine in order to be active. Plus the sugar low is rubbish!

Getting sun/heat stroke is a big problem in the summer months. I thought i was getting it at wickham once, pump tracks are so damn fun!
