Deleting topics
« on: August 03, 2008, 21:49:47 PM »

How come topics are constantly deleted on this forum, would it not be a better idea to just lock them and give a reason why at the bottom instead of just deleting them?

or maybe move them to a 'garbage bin folder'?

sometimes i myself and others write quite abit on a topic an the next thing we know theyre deleted. with no reason....sometimes its because the mods think its been answered etc but thats nott always the case....

i feel if it was put in a garbage bin section, then you could request it to be moved back, but only with a good reason why it should be.

Probably because most of them have been posted far too many times before. I just can't see why people can't just use the search button. The other reason is prob because it was in the wrong place.

Realise there is that reason but maybe an explanation is better and people would get a better idea rather than just deleting the topic, if they know why it was deleted they would know better next time.

there has been a couple ive seen where people questions arn't answered. i believe 'muttleys' topic was deleted but that was sorted after speeking to Al.

its just kind of annoying spending time writing something for someone to hopefuly answer, and to then find that its been deleted.

i understand that some boneidle people cant seem to use the search button but there are some of us who use it and find that we cant find the exact thing were looking for....hence the reason we post what we post.

another thing is. some topics get deleted once a problem is sorted. perhaps it would make sense to make a storage section on here to look up something that has been sorted in the past, that way others then find what they need to know...

sorry for kinda nicking your thread btw...

thanks

The thing is, most topics will have been started before, the forums been around for atleast 4 years,(I think) so there is only so many threads that can be made.
However some of these topics need to be bought back up to remind people about them or maybe the person needs a different answer to the ones on a previous thread of the same nature.

I didn't delete Muttley's thread, I linked to the one he was asking about and locked it.

SFAIK no thread gets deleted when its been "sorted" if it can be of any use to someone in the future.

Maybe it was both of mine, although the second one was pretty much asking for it, I'd concede that much.

As someone who doesn't use this site often, I think it's both rude and obtuse as to why you take such a hardline with people that are less familiar with the site. Fair enough if it's outright offensive or perverse; but asking if there are any decent spots in Dorking constitues neither in my book. And if the main forum is the wrong place to post such a thing, outright deletion seems excessive. FWIW I even scanned the forum list and it's not racing and I'm f**ked if I want anything to do with a "tribal gathering." So?

Answers on a postcard please fellas.

It clearly states under the heading what the board is for. We have a lot of people from above the Watford gap on the forum you know, yet they cope with the name southerndownhill. Roll Eyes

I had a thread in "non bike related sales and wants" advertising legitimate copies of windows xp and all of a sudden it's disappeared without so much as an explanation.

If you want people to learn from what they have done / stop them from doing it again then it would help if you tell them what they actually have done to warrant the deletion in the first place.

IMO it would make more sense to write a reason then lock the thread. That way the thread would soon dissapear and i'd have some idea as to where my threads gone.

If i'm honest with you - and i don't mean this in an insulting way, just a frank one, this forum has the rudest moderation of any forum i've visited. I have always tried my best to stick to the rules of the forum, i dont use text speak, i dont call other members names, i dont start threads about random crap, i try to offer advice (whether its any help or not is a different matter Tongue) however occasionally i make mistakes, From previous experience i can either expect a moderator to come down on me like a ton of bricks practically calling me stupid or to point blank delete my thread with no explanation.

It seems to me as though you all see this as a chore as opposed to a hobby. If you dont enjoy doing it then surely it isnt worth doing.
