An Idea?!
« on: August 18, 2008, 14:46:56 PM »

Well I was thinking a possible way to reduce the amount of s**t posted on certain parts of this forum, helping the moderators out a bit would be to have a karma related system. I know we shouldn't really talk about 'karma' however I think this might work.
If your karma, 'neutral number' level (take mine for example +4,-3 neutral number being +1) falls below the set number below -5 say, privileges could be taken away!? The same would go for benefits added if your 'neutral number' is raised above say +15. Privileges taken away and privileges added to certain good/bad users could consist of....

Privileges taken away.

1) Not being able to show an avatar
2) Limiting number of posts a day
3) Not being able to use a signature
4) Not being able to post pics
5) Not being able to use emoticons

ETC...

Privileges added.

1) Ability to see certain boards
2) Ability to use signature and avatars
3) Not having a post limit per day.
4) Allowed to embed images into posts.

ETC...

At the moment I cant really think of many but I'm sure plenty more could easily be added. This could be a really dumb idea but I thought that certain users may respond to this and try to make improvements, thinking about what they post and keeping the forum clean and a bit tidier.

Thanks, Tom

Yeh, coz thats going to go well for me Undecided

BUT! alot of the reason some people get Negative Karma is the fact their own personal opinion isnt the same as one of the smiters. Not the fact what they've posted is rubbish.  EG, pretty much all of my - karma's.

'Smiters' are fairly well respected members of the forum though, possibly why they have the ability to smite. Sometimes personal opinions could be addressed in a more appropriate manner instead of the regular ''That bike looks like s**t'' ETC.

Oh no, I'm talking about personal opinions on things where there isn't a right or wrong answer, Eg. a debate.

And Karma is just given out Willy nilly now, not a point in acknowledging it to be honest.

I think it sounds reasonable but seeing moderators' responses to related posts involving more people writing crap posts or suggestions hiding the chill zone (for example) from cetain members, I don't think this would catch on.

The issue with something like the Chill zone is that it can contain anything non-bike related, so in some instances, this could be someone saying "I had fish and chips for tea" (although that probably wouldn't last and is a poor example but you get what i mean).

Instead, i think we should get a message/feedback system when karma is dished out explaining why you received it either quoting or telling you what it was you did good/bad. Because I only recognised one instance where i received karma and understood why i got it.

But that's my view/opinion.

This neeeds to happen seriously. How do you expect people to learn whats accepted / not accepted.?
Its like punishing a baby when they do something wrong but not telling them what they did wrong. Theyll just do it again.

No that's not the point Karma does make people think of what there actually posting half the time.
Something that people want/need on the forum should be suspended teaching forum bullshitters a lesson.
I dont want this thread to turn into a bitching session either like a few recent ones (Pork Board ETC) so make a point and back it up if your going to post.

Tom,

Its a good idea, but I'm not sure I'd link it to Karma. I'd likely relate it to a respect system that "respected" forum members could use.  There is a halfway house available we could use ATM, but I've not tested it to much. It is something we're looking into.

But thats not really the point or karma at all. Think or karma in the same way you shout at the cat when it pisses on the carpet...

Hmm hunting people down and dousing them in petrol may be a little harsh even if they are world class asshats. Or am I missing something?  Wink

Post restrictions would definitely be a good thing, was that not used some time in the past? Also what ever happened to Blacklisting, not seen anyone with that dishonour in a while...

What I think would be a good idea with the Karma system is having either a tick or a cross appear in the box where you've applauded/ smited a user. For example, a member recently commented in detail about his use of long travel single crown forks from first hand experience, (Totems, Domains and Lyriks.) I found his post really useful, and certainly worthy of being applauded. The thing is, the plus points are all well and good, but there was no way to 'tip my hat' as it were to his informative post. Similarly, a smited user can't reflect on what they've posted.
I do like the idea of Karma, but limiting it to one per user/ post, and no random point giving, would be a real benefit to the system. Yes... it is extra work, and it is a hassle to implement, but the current system is open to abuse unfortunately.
