What the hell is wrong with my Pro II!?
« on: August 19, 2008, 20:02:12 PM »

Had my Pro II about 2 1/2 months now, I'm not sure how many miles I've done on it, but it never go on long XC rides, I don;t even ride up hills  Roll Eyes So anyway, about 2 weeks ago, my hub started making a crunching noise, opened up the freehub to find two broken springs. Me and my collegues thought it was a bit odd, but maybe just dodgy springs, so we just replaced the two broken springs and the pawls that the springs held aswell.

All was well,, but just been out for a ride today, and the noise started again. Instantly thought the worse, so opened the freehub, TWO MORE BROKEN SPRINGS!

What the hell could be causing springs to break? I've heard of broken pawls, but springs? I'm 99% sure that its a problem with the hub, because I don't ride enough miles or harshly enough to cause this to happen. And the fact that it has happend twice is another sign its a manufacturing fault.

I'll obviously give Hope a buzz in the morning, just wondered if anybody knew of the problem or has heard of it before?

well maybe the second 2 springs were the 2 that you didn't replace and the hub just came with dodgy springs.

And the likelyness of a hub being supplied with 4 faulty spings is high...

Call Hope and explain the issue. They know more about their hubs than anyone else...

Called Hope, they are sending me some new springs. They said they aren't really sure what it could be, and to check for signs of wear or damage, which I have done and found nothing  Undecided

I will just have to fit the new springs and if the same thing happens again, send the hub back to Hope for them to look at.

When I re-assemble should I use a small bit of grease because last time I used a generous amount, and im thinking if i use less it wil be easier for the pawls to enagage meaning less pressure on the springs?

do not grease heavily

light grease or heavy oil , smeared on thinly ....

over greasing means the pawls dont engage and release correctly !
