People posting bad advice
« on: August 20, 2008, 07:42:15 AM »

Call me a square but...

I've just read the post in General Banter about number boards on bike racks and seen people suggesting solutions and/or courses of action which are, ultimately, illegal.  This sort of thing happens a lot in the Garage sub as well.  I'm a little concerned by people posting such suggestions on a well supported forum.  There are plenty of easily persuaded youngsters on here who are possibly dumb enough, if pulled by the police, to blurt out 'all the other downhillers said it was fine'.  Then the same copper will be on the look out for cars with bikes on the back every so slightly obscuring a plate and giving people grief.  Just another reason to give bikers a bad rep.  Worse still if any such incident resulted in an accident and were followed back to the forum and any mods/individuals.

How do the mods feel about this?  I know it's 'just the internet' but potentially misleading individuals isn't really on, right?

Cheers

If its obviously bollocks we will delete, but we don't know the letter of the law well enough to know everything that is, or isn't, bollocks. Generally people will post in the thread who know to say that the previous advice is bollocks. Thats pretty much how an open forum works.

Would that cover stuff such as 'it's not legal but you'll never get pulled for it'?  That's one of my main gripes, effectively saying it's fine to do it and they'll get away with it

Cheers

I see your point, but as the poster says its not legal I don't see why we'd pull it. Anyone with common sense will know the poster is a plonker and will realise that doing something illegal like that is asking for trouble (my GF has been stopped by the Police twice 'cos her car was "sounding loud" - its a 205diesel. Cops will pull you for any reason if they are bored).

 Cheesy

If you're cool with it then that's fine.  Only posted to see if it was something you guys might want to address, so I'll let you get on with the continued good work.

Thanks for the feedback
