If the hub can wobble side to side and if you put the front brake on rock as if the headset is lose does that mean the bearing have died?

Yer it will just need new bearings. really easy to get hold of some just ask at your lbs and it only costs about £10.

Or just read the bearing code on the seal, and type it into ebay. You can get them for about a fiver or less.

yer. but im sure you need some kind of a hope tool to remove the bearings. and maybe even put them back in.

when my mate had to get his bearings replaced it cost him £15 including fitting at the lbs

what forks are you using as rock shox forks with a maxel need to be done up super tight
