NS Surge or Cotic BFe?
« on: August 25, 2008, 15:56:31 PM »

In the market for a hardtail frame, is gonna be used to ride everything that I wouldn't want to ride the (planned) full on DH rig on, for example on trailcentres like afan, FR/DH type stuff when I cant be bothered to break out the big rig and a spot of DJ/4X/commuting. Basically your standard "do it all" job.

By a process of elimination I am down to two frames: the NS surge or the Cotic BFe, intended build is pikes, saints, single chainring with bash and chain device and X9 gearing. Am not too arsed about weight as whatever I build will be lighter than the bike that is currently performing these duities and that works fine. Am 6ft, 14st and ride like a rapist (i.e. it's gonna get crashed LOTS!) if that makes any difference, was considering the small cotic if I went that way.

Anyone ridden both? have any input? is the extra £200ish for the Cotic gonna be worth it? Geometry wise they both look about right for what I want (albeit the cotic is maybe a little more "all round" than the NS) but with money being a bit tight justifying the cost is my major concern.

Also does anyone know what size seatclamp the NS takes?

I ride a small Cotic BFe at the moment....it's been my DH bike for the last 3months effectively after having sold my big rig.

It's an unreal bike, it's taken a royal battering from me.  I've literally gone out and ridden it like my big bike.  I've also been riding a lot of XC on it, and a bit of 4x.  Stunning little frame.  I'm running 36's running at 140mm and can't really see why you'd need any more on it, it all feels tight and fast with the angles as is.

I got mine second hand, but purely because at the time I couldn't get hold of one new, it's been a good purchase.  I made a right mess of the mech hanger though, being non-replaceable on a steel frame, but a trip to a local machine shop and a fiver got that sorted.

Definately recommended.  Mine's going soon though, got to go back to the big bikes!

If you go for the Cotic I would definitely go for the small, the large just looks to big and long to be good for anything other than xc.

Have a look at the Dialled Alpine, Prince Albert or On One 456

Ah yes thats the beauty of steel for sure.
How much you after for it Rootes? also how did you lower the 36's to 140mm? They're floats aren't they? I would have liked 36's but wasnt fussed on the talas system, fancy a coil fork.

They are indeed floats, they can be internally adjusted down in 10mm increments using Fox spacers, it's all official and whatnot.  My feelings re. the Talas system were exactly the same, so when I got told about the Floats, I grabbed them.

As for pricing, I've possibly got a frame/fork swap going down for a set of 40's.  I'll find out if that's happening, if not I'll drop you a PM.

Yeah considered all three of those frames. I've ridden my mates 456 a few times and it seemed pretty good actually, just maybe a little steep in the headangle for my liking. The alpine looks good but seems to be a pain to get hold of one, any ideas on that front anyone?

Cool Rootes, cheers. Do you know if the spacer thing works with the 36 vans?

The spacer thing is Floats only, you can change the travel of Vanillas, but it's a total bodge.  cut springs and the like.

I think On one are doing a 456 summer edition with a slacker head angle. Might be worth inquiring about it since I think there only about £125.

For Dialled bikes email info@dialledbikes.com

The spacer thing doesnt work on 36 vans either.

The summer edition would seem to fit the bill too then if I can get hold of an ISCG adaptor.
I'll drop Dialled a line see what comes up, never thought of buying direct from them, was looking on google for shops.

Alright pal,

Heres my Inbred, don't think you've seen it in 'street mode'! Currently an expensive pub bike but it's by far one of the best bikes I've owned .... awesome Smiley

Having had a go on Dan's (Rootes) bike I can safely say it is awesome and he rags it like a big bike! I am 6ft 2" and would not have thought it was a small! Plenty big enough for me!

My swap/new purchase has gone down the pan.

So I'll now be ragging the crap out of my BFe for the coming year!  I was a little depressed, then I went out riding it and realised how much I bloody love it!
