Hi everyone. We are the new distributors for Univega here in the UK. We are currently selecting one extra rider for our 2009 season DH team. The ride will be one of our 5inch travel slopestlye bikes, the Ram ES 970. We are looking for someone willing to make a commitment to riding most UK events, but also Megavalanche 2009. In return we will offer the use of a bike for the season and full race support/coverage. Anybody interested should email Lloyd50cycles@gmail.com with pics, a riding cv, and a list of all results. We are looking to hear from either juniors, seniors, or masters, and also lets hear the ladies..... don't be shy!

Well a 5” air sprung bike could be setup for DH I reckon…
What you loose on big bump performance you probably claw back in lower weight, better cornering and improved pedalling… Sod it it’s free, so it’s not like you’ll loose sleep if you dent it…
People seem to have very set ideas these days about what can and cannot be used as a DH bike, whatever happened to the “race what ya brung” attitude?
It’s simply snobbery, pure and simple, …
Can a 5” bike Cut it? I reckon it probably can on a lot of courses (there was a time when 5” bikes were all DH riders had), I’ve seen HT riders kick the arses off of everyone in shorter course races, a smaller lighter bike will always handle better in tech sections and out accelerate a long travel Barge on pedally bits, but obviously on a rougher section a Glory or Sunday will have the advantage, it’s horses for courses…
But I reckon any keen rider, short on funds and/or a ride, and hoping to race next season should apply, what would they loose by applying? Surely its better to be racing a free Univega than stand by the track and watch, because your too proud to ride the sponser’s bike…

And its not good advertising either for the sponsor as the bike would probably crack after heavy use as it doesnt look like its built for Dh. If you turned up with a national with that you would get some strange looks...

Yes it could be "set up" for Dh but that doesn't mean its any good. You could set up a DH bike as a Xc bike, but it wouldn't work very well. You couldn't put long travel forks on either ! The headangle is really steep ! Also what downhill bike comes with 3 rings and a stem the size of a scaffolding pole ? Yes a 5" bike could cut it for example the bottle rocket, but that has much better geometry ! It's nice that their trying to support riders and make a team, but maybe their making the wrong team and should make an Xc one instead. Or give you a more Dh suited bike like the other one above. Its not good advertising anyway seeing the bike looks like it would snap easily. And if you turned up with that bike at a national you get some very strange looks and most people would think Univega is a complete joke giving their sponsored riders that.
