Hone crankset for dirt jumping?
« on: September 01, 2008, 05:47:48 AM »

Hey,

I´ve considered Hone cranks for my dirt jump bike. I already have those cranks on my Heckler and the short period of time I´ve had them they have performed flawlessly.

Main reason going for those are the weight and affordable price. Those are almost 200g´s lighter than the Saints. I guess, that there is reasonable reason for that weight difference, but íf I´m understood correctly Hones are quite close to Xt cranks, but just with the steel insert for the pedals. After all, some people run Xt cranks on their dh bikes.

Has anyone experiences with Hones on use like this?

Cheers..

you should have no problems running Hone, as long as they are properly installed (get an experienced mechanic to do them if you are unsure or don't have the Hollowtech II tools) and keep periodically checking them to make sure all the bolts are snug

the Hone is similar to LX in terms of the metal alloy used for the arms, and the quality of the finishing

make sure you get the dual chainring / bashguard Hone as this has the steel pedal insert and washer - the triple Hone does not

We sold stack loads of Hone cranks this season through our workshop, mainly to riders with freeride and dirt jump bikes as a replacement for damaged Truvativ Howizter cranks or unbranded 3 piece cromoly cranks

you may still find Hone for sale, but SLX is starting to come through and we have already put this on several bikes at our shop, and I would go with SLX as its an updated version of Hone (just as the new 09 Saint cranks are an updated version of current Saint)

run Hones for 3 years now without a problem... look a bit tatty but have worked faultless since day 1! Can't rate them highly enough... now i've got a second bike i'm going to find a set for that too (or SLX) which proves my point again!

hones are awsome. i too run them on my DH bike and have had no problems with them, so i would have thought they should be alright for dirt jumping. i've had them since they first came out and they still running as smooth as the day i got them.

Hones are excellent, just make sure you use the pedal washers. I got my hones off a mate without the washers, having been told nowt about them, and the insert decided to pop out.

What about the XC version, without steel inserts. I know everyone says get the other version, but I have a set of XC Hones spare, and considering swapping them for the Saints on my DJ bike...

Good idea? Bad idea?

I wouldn't. Took only a few hours riding for me to wreck a driveside xt thread on my street bike. I'll take them if your selling tho...  Roll Eyes
