Avid BB7.......opinions?
« on: September 01, 2008, 18:55:33 PM »

I'm building a budget DH rig and wondering about sticking BB7's on it rather than Juicy 5's or similar. Heard good things about power and reliability but most reviews i've seen are from ppl upgrading from V's rather than stepping down from Hydro's (I'm used to Juicy 7's/Hope's....).

I'm thinking nice and simple, cheap, less to go wrong.

What do people think?

i think of you can't afford hydros (or at least decent ones) then they're really great!
i'm not too sure about their downhill-ing capabilities but i know several trials riders who swear by them and tried one before, it was insanely powerful.
but because it's a cable disc you might need too fettle with it more often too keep cables and sharpness fresh...

Im thinking of going over to one on my Dirt Jump hardtail, but thats completely different.
Ive had one before and got on with it really well, but im not sure of its power for DH.

They work amazingly well at low speeds.  Used to run one on the front of my trials bike.  I'm told they fade badly at high speeds under heavy use.  Check mtbr for some reviews though

got them on my gary fisher rig ... coming up for 2 years ago ...

covered stupid ammounts of miles , done countless xc and marathon races on it (singlespeed rocks)

and when i got it i had money set aside to change the brakes to hydros , i opted to try the bb7s and decided it was the best decision i ever made ! great brakes

when i build by long distance MTB tourer when i get back from nz in time to try an epic journey off road ill be using bb7s

reasoning being , ever tried bleeding a brake with no tools or fluid in the backs of beyond ? one spare cable takes up no space

not experianced this fade either and ive riden some hairy long downhills on them

Better than hydros in most cases ive found. The only reason ive opted for saints/hopes are because of a nicer lever feel.

I'm running them on my trials bike. Just have a disc on the front and a Vee on the back. The disc is daft powerful the way I have it set up, would definately recommend them for someone on a budget. Im running mine on an XTR lever and it feels great

That was quite a common combination.

Cheers Guys.

Kind of mixed opinions...

Does anyone know anything else about this 'fade' - I can't see that they could as there's no fluid to overheat and if it's just a stock pad issue, it could easily be resolved with decent pads.....?

Ive never experienced any problems at all with BB7s. The best pads i used were EBC's Although many others such as goodridge are good.
