Compartment syndrome, anyone had this? Very close call!
« on: September 03, 2008, 19:53:04 PM »

Suffered a haematoma/dead leg on saturday, tried to massage it yeasterday morning to loosen it up a little, so i would be able to run and play rugby. 10 minutes later my leg has completley locked up, and I was in agony!
Went to see the physio that afternoon on an emergency appointment, and I was given the lowdown on what happened:

The massage caused my leg to rebleed internally again, which raised the pressure in my thigh massivley, and swelled up so much that the diameter of my left thigh was 3.5cm bigger than my right, it doesnt sound a lot, but when the physio pointed out that it had swollen, and I looked down, it really looked massive!

I was on the verge of getting something called compartment syndrome (google it), I would have got it if it carried on getting worse, but thank god the swelling is reducing now, and im getting more movement back and less pain, but Im just happy because in some cases of comparntment synd. you have to get the limb cut open to relieve the pressure... which i really dont want!

Moral of story, let the physio cure it, dont do DIY! the physio knows the best thing to do and the best time to do it at Smiley

Sorry if this seems a bit pointless, but this is my 4th deadleg of the summer, and im starting to get fed up with them now, they really do suck   Sad

mate of mine in the RAF had compartment syndrome , has 2 very nasty looking very long scars down the side of his calves .....

sounds painfull and there is quite a long rehabilitation program to go on after that

sounds like you got lucky and had a physio that spotted it early , my mate didnt have that luxuary !

good physios are worth there weight in gold ! mines helped me countless times ...its more a chiropractor i need now !

Ive had some bad dead legs playing rugby before, the ones where you cant walk properly for about 4 days! I always tried massaging it better, unaware of what could of happened! I think i will steer clear of that next time!

Just a brief update. After many ultra sounds, discovered that i had 2 intramuscular haematomas in my left quad, one was 12x4cm, which is apparently huge! and one was something like 4x6cm.. still not back on the bike although can run and ride, but impacts will take me back to square 1, hopefully i can be back sometime soon after 11th november, which is when my last physio is...  Grin
