Creaky Saints
« on: September 03, 2008, 21:41:42 PM »

:'( Was riding to my lbs today and when i started to put power down throught the cranks I could hear creaking noises, I'm pretty scared/annoyed because i've only had them since about january.

Took em to bits when i got home and cleaned all the gunk off em. Then noticed little ring marks on the axle where the bearing cups sit, pretty scared I've worn them out already... I thought i'd had my bb reamed and faced but obviously something not right Undecided

Any body got any ideas what it could be? gonna strip the whole drivetrain down tomorrow and clean re-tighten everything.

Check your chainring bolts 1st- they can give an unholy creak and mess with your head...

Mine did this from time to time, it seemed to come and go. Eventually found that I had one too many bb spacers in, it was causing that preload cap to come undone as it was only being held in by like 1 - 2 threads and that the crank was sitting on the wrong bit of the axle and was coming slightly loose. Took a spacer out and tightened it all up and the problem went away. Of course it goes without saying if you have the correct number of spacers this may not solve the problem.

Do the bearings feel stiff or pitted? Sorry to state the obvious but if they aren't then they can't really do much noise making, unless the facing is really bad in which case they would have gone long ago.

Grease the splines. Only lightly though. That was the cause of a fairly loud creak on mine a few weeks ago.
