BMX - under £250
« on: September 05, 2008, 12:31:57 PM »

Guys - need your help, after building my son a nice little mountain bike, he's now wanting a BMX like is mate next door. Sods law really.  I am cool to get him one for X-mas for a budget of <£250.

Please let me have the benefit of your experience on what's around for that budget.  Last time I built and rode a BMX was 1984 when I used to race the little feckers.

Should I build or buy a complete?  Any help appreciated.   Clearly it need to be good enough for me to razz around Patchway and other 'attractively' located Bristol BMX tracks...

To be honest, for 250quid, you will get a full 4130 frame/forks with 3 pc cranks and 2 pc bars.

Most manufacturers will give you that for 250 easily, so it's whatever you like the look of.

They will all be pretty similar.

But look at WeThePeople or FIT.

Quite a few decent discounted bikes, an the guy "Jamie" is very helpful, i buy anything i can from there for my MTB.

Always great service.

How tall are you/ is your kid. I'm 6'2" and coming from mtbs i wanted something with a 21" tt. They're a lot harder to get hold of for that budget but if you're alright with the standard 20.5" tt then you shoud be able to get a nice little ride for that money. Definitely go for the 4130 cromo. Some onyl have the top and downtubes as 4130 so try and avoid them and get 100% cromo. I think eastern have some alright ones for around that price. Federal do as well, in fact, last time i checked, you would have been pretty spoilt for choice at that price range with a 20.5" tt. Mongoose do some pretty nice specs on their bikes and i think they're getting their act together with their frames. Just some food for thought:

If you can stretch to £299.99 for a We The People Addict 2008 i'd get that, rode my mates and they seem really nice. Seen as ist 2008 will proberly drop in price anyway.

Fit Bike Ams are pretty nice bikes IIRC!
About £219 i think.

You should be able to get a pretty nice BMX for £250, its probably worth looking 2nd hand aswell?
