What Avid Brakes?
« on: September 05, 2008, 21:00:55 PM »

Right i currently have Juicy 7's and really like the feel of the Avid brakes BUT imlooking to get a new set of brakes so what do you guys recommend the Codes or code 5's??

What are the pros and cons of each brakes.

Also do you use other Avis eg Elixir's, Juciy ultimate, yadda yadda...

Got some juicy 7s on my ht atm, and when i first got them they were brilliant and i had ample power. Recently they've sorta let me down spent my morning today replacing the pads and bleeding them.

The pads haven't bedded in properly yet but i'll update you on how thery're doing in a couple of days. Considering i've only had them about 1.5years and i don't ride my bike all that often (once a week to work and back minimum) i wasnt really impressed with how long the stayed sweet for.

Well the Code 5's are essentially the Juicy 7's (same levers) with 4 pistons.

Codes: Really powerful.
Elixr: Less powerful, but more modulation.

No.

A code 5 is a code caliper on a juicy lever, not a juicy 7 lever as that has the bite point ajust which a code 5 does not.

Get the new new Elixir's CR brakes. They arn't that much more expensive you can order them for $159.99 each with free shipping if you look on google. And they are a very good improvement over the juicy series.

Ok so the power isn't quite same as the Code's but not by much and the leaver feel, control, brake life are all dramatic increases over all over Avid models.

If you are not wanting to order from the US i think you are probably best waiting to till you can find them over here (i don't know if and when they are available UK side) i just googled them for the price.

Hope that helps a bit mate

my Juicy 7s are now 2.5 years old, and have never let me down

they've been upgraded with titanium bolts and straitline levers, and the red aluminium Juicy ultimate pad contact adjuster (they originally came with nasty red plastic one)

couple of bleeds and set of pads over the years, new resevoir seal on front brake last year, and downsized rotors from 203mm to 185mm front and rear

don't really see any need to change them...

tried the new Elixir brakes on a 2009 SX Trail, not really sure i like the adjuster - its "in-line" and no where as easy to use as the pad contact adjust on the Juicy 7

don't like Codes, seen several come through our workshop with seized pistons and other problems, and seen a little heavy when i have never found my Juicys lacking in power even on trips to Whistler, etc.

Codes are clearly not lighter than Juicys.

I would save your money and keep the Juicy 7s - bleed them and change pads if you need to.   They are powerful enough for DH with 203/180 rotors.

I'd go for codes.
I've had a pair on a dh bike, 4x bike, and now one on the back of my street bike, never had any problems with fade, power, modulation etc etc.

Update, after a good bleed, pad replacement and bed-in my juicy7s are back on form Cheesy Got juicy carbons on my full suss atm and although i havent usued that properly yet, the pads are bedded in and feel good.

The elixir brakes are gonna be better than the juicys or they wouldn't have replaced them, although i'd give em a year to iron out all the kinks. All the code 5s I've used always feel a bit rubbish compared to juicy7s or actual codes.
