Taking apart Marzocchi 66rc2x
« on: September 05, 2008, 22:37:42 PM »

Hey. I have a set of 150mm 2006 Marzocchi 66rc2x's, and the adjust on the left leg (can't remember what it is off the top of my head) has seized up. Basically I want to strip them down and see whats the problem.

Nice one, Borgia.

P.S. I've done a search on here and google and it didn't throw anything up Wink

Manual is here <http://manualer.happymtb.org/marzocchi/>

Easy enough to do, did mine last month so if you get stuck just ask.

Nice one Smiley I did look on the marzocchi website but couldn't find anything. Only a general manual for all the 2006 forks.

I di this last week. you need a socket set and the shimano casset tool to take the top caps off. allen keys

1. Clean fork,
2. Take off adjuster carefull its easy to round the little allen keys and let any air out fo the op caps
3. loosen the foot nust anti clockwise with a ratchet. Note they take differnt sizes. Tap to make sure they are loose. Oil will piss out. take foot nuts off.
4. Unto the top caps and pull out the rods. Lay out to drain. pull the forks apart.
5. Take the dust seals out witha screw driver, then take otu the spring clip and leaver out the oil seals.

to put back togther
1.put the seals in first and wet them with a little oil or fork grease.
2. Put the lowers onthe stantions and compress the fork.
3. Put the rods back in and tighten up the foot nuts
4. half extent and put in 200ml of 7.5 oil (205ml if you are heavy)
5. extent to full lenght and carfull screw the top caps back on
6. check every thing is tight. Pump a few times.
7. put allt he knowbback on and adjust.

then go for a test ride.

I dont recomend tahign the top cap of the rods unless you really want to get fiddly.

Happy trails.

Pete

i looked at there site and looks like they have the values the wrong way round:
66 RC2X c.150     205/205     210/210
66 RC2X c.170    190/190    195/195

2007 they recomend 190 but it not quite enough.

Having abit of trouble taking the top caps off. I've got the right tool and everything. When I undo them, each one gets to a point, where it gets tight, and then just clicks, and goes back down or somthing. I undone both of them at the same time and when they were both at that point, if i compressed the forks, they would come free of the crowns, but still attached to the springs/cartridges inside. It would be abit messy trying to get the oil out with them like this.

If I were to undo the footnuts etc, would the oil simply pour out the bottom of the legs, or squirt out? If it pours out I will be able to undo the footnuts upside down without getting a face full of oil, right?

Oh, and if anyone could shed some light on why I can't get the top caps off it would be much appreciated Smiley

The oil isn't pressurised.

If you need to undo the top caps- theres a grub screw on the underside, and a circlip on the inside (which you see once you've removed the rebound/compression adjusters.

Right. By taking the footnuts off I was able to pull out the cartridges in both legs, with the top caps still attached, and drain the oil. Trouble is, I still can't get the top caps off. I've taken the circlip out aswell as the grub screw, and its still stuck firm? Any ideas? Should it just slide off though, or did you have to force it off so to speak?

Anyone got any ideas? Bit lost as what to do now because the marzocchi manual seems to be wrong...?

Heres some pictures of the inards as they are. I want to remove the top caps. It clearly shows that you are able to do this in the marzocchi manual. I have removed both the grub srews and circlips, which hasn't done anything Huh
