Easy Now!

Clearing a mass amount of nettles, brambles etc
« on: September 29, 2008, 07:46:13 AM »

Morning guys,

After failing to improve my local trails at all last year I really wanna do a sterling job this winter, starting asap too. Problem is though, the whole area is massively overgrown with nettles and thick brambles and bush. So first I need to get rid of it all, how would be the best way? Any weed killers? Petrol strimmer?

I'll get pics soon to show the scale/size of the area.

Cheers, Ben.

dont take this as a joke - controlled burning works if you are sure you can manage the area and you know the land owner. Just make sure it not on a peat base!

a 6 foot hedge cutter with an articulated head makes a good job ... but you might not have access to them .... cost about 800 quid ....

i just nab em from work !

Yeh extended hedge cutters are good! you can hire sthil ones for about £50 a day when I last looked, ethier that or a sthil strimmer, but a hedge cutter is easier!

To keep down the smaller weeds I would probably just pour petrol over them, kills them and stops stuff growing in the soil for quite a while.

What with todays petrol prices i think Trail_Rat 's articulated hedge cutter would be cheaper Wink

have you ever tried a sythe.....nothing better than good ol blood and sweat put into buidling trails, none of this 'power tool' malarchy  Roll Eyes

and the great thing is you can look like the grim reaper.....and to avoid the more realistic affect, dont cut yourself and get blood on the blade Wink

Whats wrong with just riding on them? Small weeds aren't much of a problem anyway as they would help bind the soil.

Can't see burning being a popular (or clever) idea unless you know what you're doing, mate of mines dad managed to burn down a hedge from a bonfire that had been set 2 days before  Roll Eyes All the heat went down and a small fire burnt through the ground until it reached the hedge. Not that I'd expect it to happen but it can...

Just go through, break the stems with a spade or a big stick. Come back a couple of days later and rake it all out. Wallah!

that would be good to get rid of a couple of leaves but to do a proper area you would need a whole lynx factory and a lotta time aswell.

i find strimming it all and then going over what is left with a ride on mower to clear it all up works really well.

In my experience rake it then ride it loads, keeps all the weeds down and works a treat. All out local trails are done this way and it really isnt much effort at all!

You could just use weed killer, the stuff I use is great, just spray it on leave it for 2 weeks and bobs your uncle ,dead stingers.
