Who'd use a psychologist?
« on: October 03, 2008, 16:22:36 PM »

Guys, on the back of the sports psychology thread I just want to gauge interest a bit.

I'm in the final year of my degree now, and am working towards BPS and BASES accreditation to become a sports psychologist. The question is this....

Would any of you consider using sessions with a sports psychologist to attempt to work to improve your performance in either MTB racing, or any other forms of sport in which you compete?  I'm currently working with an athlete as part of my degree by assessing his current performance over several sessions of observation and interview I'm now developing some interventions with the aim of improving his performance and reaching set targets.

This is something that could be linked in with most sports, I just want to know if there's ANY interest in it.  I know from the messages I've got in the past that people are always keen for free advice (which I'm happy to give btw) just want to know if they'd be willing to pay for one on one sessions...

Let me know what you think.  And keep it sensible, I don't want people telling me to try another job etc...

Cheers guys.

Dan

Ever thought of another proffession  Wink

Back on topic, I remember reading in Dirt (a year or so ago maybe) about the editor (I think) who was using one for a season.

I don't think there would be a great deal of interest within the mountain bike world, but sport in general...

Right, excellent start.  The question was do YOU think YOU'd consider using one.

I don't want general opinions based on poor assumptions.  Thanks.

Well, you'd assume from my post that it would be a no from me. I figured that was relatively clear...

Would've been easier to say No wouldn't it?  Rather than be an arse.

1-1.

If i was competing alot and found my self hitting a "wall" or if i wanted to really push my self then yes i would!

Actually at the minute, i probably would, havent ridden downhill for a long time and the last time i did i wimped out of just about everything, ridden bigger stuff i just couldnt get passed the mental block that i "might" fall off or not make a double!

SO in short.....yes, when can you start?  Cheesy

I'd sooner bed Rachel Atherton and learn mental preparation from her.

Sorry, no would be my answer.

But for any world class sports person, yes.  Its a profession that's based on reputation and unique approaches that deliver results.  How will you use your direct and tactful diplomacy and powers of persuasion to drag better performance out of people?

"Ride faster you tw*t" may not be helpful.

Having been a sort of guinea pig, I can safely say I would be utterly stuffed without the help rootes has given me. I personally think anyone of any level in the sport can benefit from a bit of mental training, DH's about 80% head game anyway.

Harry - you were utlerly stuffed into the middle of the last double at cwmcarn last time I saw you.

"I can clear it, I can clear it, I can...................bugger.   I can't clear it"

Keep going with the head treatment, as long as I can watch when you have a crack at the quarry jump.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I was full of big-bike-cockiness. Besides, I was whipping over it the afternoon before! It wasn't a clearance issue...just a case of not landing solely on my front wheel next time.

Quarry gap next time.

It's one of those things, I'm well aware that a LOT of people out there don't believe it works and wouldn't be as keen to try it out as others.

And like councilling it doesn't tend to come cheap but I'm trying to gauge interest, I've got a lot of ideas, and before I unleash them I want to see what the deal is with you guys as my research sample!

Keep them coming guys.

No, I believe for my level the best way to improve is to ride with people at or above my level.  Not actual 'training'.

Its suprising just how much of riding is psychological, some people can push them selves further than others without the help of a professional.

But there is a point where most people stop developing and need that little bit extra help to get past that point.

But then you can put riding down to sheer natural ability or skills which people have to learn! Some pick it up easier than others!
