Ovalized headtube :(
« on: October 04, 2008, 13:29:29 PM »

Just taken the forks of my 07 SX Trail, and the bottom headset cup came off with it. Sad It slides in and out of the headtube easily.

What are my current options? Anything decent other than getting the headtube milled out and a sleeve put in, which cost lkike £200 doesnt it?

Mate says cut up a coke can and use that as a spacer kinda thing?

How about a deep cup headset?

there isn't really a long term fix for a flared head tube, and milling it out to fit a shim is a bad idea as you are just making the walll thickness on the HT thinner

you could try bonding a deep-cup headset in there, but I would get your local specialized dealer to call SBC UK and see what they can offer you, but this depends on the condition of the frame as specialized may put the damage down to "abuse"

FYI, the 08 SX Trail frameset is selling at £699 at the moment, so it may be easier to bite the bullet and replace your frame

Syncros do a really deep cup headset that i know a few people on here have used to prolong a frame, not sure on model so may be worth a try....however yours sounds pretty bad if the cup has just fallen out with your forks.

I had a custom insert made for my headtube, cost about £100 but worth it. Although for the SX frame depending on the condition it may not be worth doing as mentioned the frames arent coming in at a huge cost.

Ok, that will work like sellotape on a frame crack.

You've done well to ovalize an SX trail.  Buy a new one if you can and keep the old one for spares.  Maybe get a frame deal without a shock to make it more economical.

If you cant feel it when riding , just leave it. Should be ok untill you gather the money for a new frame or something. Ive rode my dmr rhythm with a flarred headtube for about a year. And i abused that ALOT and it was fine tho Smiley

Syncros FR2 worked a treat for me, frame was well gone, FSA pigs just dropped in and out...then i bought the fr2 and wedged that in, took A LOT of force to get it in, but worked like it should, no movement at all now.  Thats after a year of solid riding.

Try it.

I'd fit a deep cup headset and get a head lock to keep it secure.

Argos cycles do a fix for this, I've known people run them for ages too.

Just get someone to put a weld around it and then have it reamed?
