black and white is really easy, colour is much harder. For black and white you'd need something like a paterson hand tank (ebay £10) some drying clips for the film and then the chemicals and some kind of measuring jug (under £20 for the lot) then all you need is a room that you can make totally dark (and I mean totally dark) some water and the times for the chemicals you're using. Obviously if you want traditional prints there's a lot more involved, I just used to scan in the negatives.
You dont actually need a room which is completely dark - you can use a light proof bag which has holes to put you arms through and you do it all in the bag. I think its a lot safer using a light proof bag rather than in a pitch black room because even the slightest bit of light can muck up the film. Also when using the light proof bag everything you need to use will already be in the bag so you wont we dropping anything on the floor and crawling around trying to find it for ten minutes. As for using the negatives - I just scan them in to a computer and edit them on there.
simple to learn the techniques to do it hard to get it right though enlarger is going to be expensive we chucked a load out in college last year they asked if any one wanted them but i had no room.
chemicals give u headaches and make u feel sick first of all it gets easier
