what the hell am i doing wrong?!?
« on: October 06, 2008, 21:34:34 PM »

i go through bike parts at a hell of a rate, and was wondering if theres something i'm doing seriously wrong! i just spent 3.5 months in the alsp, (les gays morzine, chamonix, pila, morgins, champery etc...)
and my total wreckage is:
1 wheelset (pro2's on 721's) with the rear wheel needing rebuilding 3/4 times and spoke snappages every week or so,
1 set of 05 dorado's
1 set of brand new boxxer races ( 1 month they lasted me!)
2 sram x9 mechs
2 mech hangers
2 bushing kits (solid mission 9)
threaded both sides of my cranks (holzfellers) and snapped a tab off
bent a set of sunline handlebars
blew one Avid Code,
2 sets of pedals
1 e13 lightguide top part
1 shimano saint chainring
3 chains ( regularly repaired before it started getting silly)

its taking the piss a bit, i'm getting to the point where i've broken or damaged all the top end stuff, so i'm running out of options.

Do you crash a lot, or just from ragging the parts?

my opinion.....Sounds like your a hard rider if youve managed to reck all these parts. therfore get back to basics and Ride a hardtail.

youl become alot smoother and you should in the long run once you start riding the full susser again, realise many different things from lines to how to ride smoother.

well its the only reason i can think of why your breaking everything.....well other than you must have really bad f*cking Karma!

Ride fast, stuff breaks. Maybe look at your riding style, but stuff does break, and lift assisted stuff is 1000% harder for your kit than riding over here, think of the mileage you do in a day!

yeah, fairy nuff,
i hardly ever crash (touched wood, its ok)
i'm not that rough, and i do usually go for the smoother line! i hop rough stuff where i can, dont flatland jumps/drops, i'm reconing bad karma!
bike is stripped down once a month or so and kept clean all the time!
i'm around 16 st, i never get on with hardtails, they just feel so small and sketch! And i dont recon proper tracks like cwmcarn inners of fort bill etc.. are going to be any fun at all on a ht!

Sounds like it could at least partially be due to setup.

Who builds your wheels? Are they evenly tensioned? Lacing pattern?

Things like your chainring bolts, are they all tightened evenly? What do you mean by you 'threaded' your cranks? -

that sounds like a installation error.

Obviously your a hard rider, which things like bent bars cant dispute. But its all the more important to take time and care putting your bike together.

a had a bike shop who usually do very good wheelbuilds do them, wheelspin
well, where the cank interfaces with the pedal, i've caught a rock and its pulled the thread/pedal right out of the crank

bloody hell mate, sounds like u thrash the s**t out of ure bike!! I've got a hardtail which I take downhilling with year old chains and mech's that still work perfect!! Think u need to look into your biking style and maybe your installations. I know for a fact through experience that if spokes keep snapping on wheels it usually means they need rebuilding, it may be a case that u need a new rim as well?

TBH that seems fairly normal for the sort of riding and the time you've been out there (maybe not the Boxxer's though!)
I'm about your weight and I got through a similar amount of kit each season.
As Katie (Ric) says you're doing some big mileage on big mountains...

Maybe you should do more routine thorough bike checks, especially on rough courses, making sure nothing coming loose or spoke tention is going.

I wouldn't have said that's an extremely bad rate of wear for 3.5 months of lift assisted riding.  It is fair to say a week solid riding out there is equivalent to a year riding in the uk, ( for me approx riding all/every weekend and 10 uplift weekends).

I spent 10 weeks in the alps this year, riding solid for nearly every day, (55 days lift assisted).  My damage list isn't as bad but not far off:

Nicolai UFO ST frame, Multiple cracks in swingarm and stress marks in front end.  (waiting for warranty replacement)
1 Pedal
1 Bottom Bracket
Pivot bearings
2 105 Rear mechs
4 Sets of gear cable, (kept sheering the outer from rocks kicking up).
2 Chains
Blew fox 36s on the spare bike

Also while out there I serviced my 888s twice, each time the oil was mullered and the difference was huge with fresh fluid.  My dhx shock was serviced before leaving and now is in desperate need of some attention.  I needed to bleed my brakes about 4-5 times, (boiling them on steep alpine singletrack, not poncey dh tracks).

I'm not suprised your forks blew, neither being known for their longevity.  Boxxers need regular lower services and oil changes to keep them happy, I'd say a minimum of every 2 weeks in the alps!

As solomanda says that can be what to expect. Granted it is a little unlucky. On my 224 I did 6 weeks and only had to true the wheels a few times, no drivetrain issues which seem to be most common. It cost about £140 tops to run for the 6 weeks including tyres.

I was'nt so lucky this season though. Needed new shock, new brake lever (incl housing) brake bleeds (expected over 9 weeks). Forks needed new rebound internals. Needed a custom made headtube sleeve as my headtube had expanded a little. Bearings for cranks, rear hub, front hub and a headset. Oh and my Rohloff was about to fall to bits, but thats really because I didnt check the bike over throughly enough and it had one of four bolts holding part of it together.

Its just wear and tear, certainly a bit of luck as well I think.
