Best headset?
« on: October 07, 2008, 14:55:37 PM »

What do people think is the best downhill headset I could get in terms of strength and durability? I'm looking at a Chris King but just want people's opinions first. Cheers  Grin

Chris Kings are good, especially if you buy from the US.

However, they score the steerer tubes of long travel forks (like 66's for example) so I can't recommend them for DH.

I've been a fan of FSA XL2's for many years, and for £20 they are faultless.

Pig Pro is my choice for a standard sized headset.  Last ages and easy to service.

CK. No issues, been fitted to about 15 bikes, still smooth as day one!

Have to say a King if you have the moneys and it's not a long travel single crown fork.
Other than that, Hope have always been spot on and definitely the best value for money headset has to be FSA The Pig.

I've run a Pig Pro on every bike I've owned and they've all been faultless.

I then had a new Hope one put on my Stinky and trashed it. £60 vs. £20?  Roll Eyes

Can't believe nobody mentioned Double X.
Cane Creek Double x. Love mine, smooth, nice looking, not too expensive, replaceable cartridge bearings.

Chris King Steelset. Don't expect to ever get it out again though! Super smooth and rock solid. Solves the CK problem of creakiness with longer travel forks as the cups are held tight. I've got an Acros one fitted to my chunk bike, and have been looking at either the AH-06 or AH-07 as a replacement when that dies. I only bought the cheap one, although that's held up well too.
