Removing fork seals without damaging them
« on: October 07, 2008, 17:01:17 PM »

Right, will be wanting to remove the seals from my 36s in the near future I want. In the past, Ive replaced them, so not been fussed when Ive damaged them, but this time I'll want to re-use them...

http://service.foxracingshox.com/consumers/Content/Service/Forks/36VAN/36VAN_RC2.htm

Says use a spanner to prise them out, which I have done, but I find that it squashes the spring around them, puts a kink in them. Will simply taking the spring off first help? Or will the rubber of the seal get damaged in anyway?

Any other ways to do it?

Is it just the dust seals you're takiong out, or both the oil and dust seals?  If it's just the dist seals, then you may be able to salvage them, although personally I wouldn't bother.  They do such an important job, and if you damage them, and they get crap under them, it can potentially nacker all your bushes and stantions in super quick time.

If it's like 40's and you want to moisten your foam rings just carefully place a screw driver between the seal and the lowers and gently twist and work your way round then just slide the up the stantion, be VERY careful. As your stantions will scratch easily.

only one seal on each leg on fox's, just buy new ones and take the lowers off if you are painting them, really easy and the seal kit will have new foam rings and crash washers for the bottom of the forks. to get them out when the lowers are off, use a large flat blade screwdriver under the seal and put a rag under the screwdriver and prise them out - be careful not to scratch the inside of the for where there seal sits on with the screw driver.

check the fox site and some i-merican dude will show you what to do with rebuilding, stripping in a nice little video, 32mm fox and 36mm are near identical. Smiley
