Paint frame/forks- not the usual questions!
« on: October 07, 2008, 22:03:38 PM »

Hi all,

Planning to paint my Fox 36s in the very near future.

Firstly, how do you all paint em? ie. prop em up against the wall, hang em from the ceiling on some string etc etc, whats the best way?

Next, I basically have two options for where to paint them, my "hobby room" (old utilityroom), or the garage, which is next to it. Hobby room is warmer (garage gets real cold at night), probably less dusty, but pretty small.

I was set on doing it in the hobby room, but do I need to worry about ventilation? Its tiny, maybe 8'x4', with no fans/windows (well, not that I can open, as its into the kitchen Cheesy)...

Wheres the best place to get paint from? Just Halfords? Or any better places? eBay?

Any recommendations on types of paints/paints to avoid? Also talking about lacquer and primer.

Think thats all for now Smiley

Sorry for all the questions, Duane.

mate u need ventalaition big time id pick garage ,, and if u gona paint the parts youre self id hang them from wire as u need to cover all round ,, but to save all the agro id just get them powder coated much stronger, and if youre not in a rush and you want a popular colour they might do it a bit cheaper if they got other orders to paint in the same colour you want

Because some bushes in forks can expand with the heat....this will either crack the fork or make them not go back together or worse (as a friend found out) go back together, look sick, make you really excited about riding them then put deep scores down the stanctions when you compress them!!!  Once again swollen bushes.

That's probably why he won't powdercoat them?!

The will effect the paint. The ventialtaion will effect you. If you want to be warm and as high as a kite the small room the other way around then garage.

I'm sure paint will say it works best at room temp bla de bla but will work within a certain temperature range.

I would spray the forks in the garage. Fumes from paint can be very hazardous and its never a good idea to use them in confined spaces.

You could always move the forks to the smaller room once you've sprayed them to let them dry quicker? Just make you whatever you hang them on can be moved easily.  Wink

There home brand, or paint from the shop in general?
About to go to Halfords now, so any pointers on the best primer/paint/laquer to get?

Ta, Duane Smiley

Try hammerrite (i think its called) its good stuff, halfords paint tends to give a rough texture and there laquer is VERY bad bad for drips, its usual for laquer to drip but halfords it really bad like! But I couldnt really recomend a shop for can spary as i usually do mine with my spray gun...

Make sure you do a proper job on

Raw the forks or sand the previous paint untill it has a rough texture.
prima (veryyyy light coat , known as a base coat) dont be worried about covering it all on the 1st layer.
wet & dry using 1200 sand paper ( be sure to get the sand paper realllly wet)
primer again
wet&dry again
then do your main coat ( what ever colour you choose) with black you need a base coat and then just 1 more coat but with colors like red etc about 4 coats or it will come out with streaks.
make sure you leave it to dry...
about 1 coat of laquer, and takkkkkke your time with this or you will end up with drips. If you do get any drip wet&dry the drip with 1200 and then polish the paint back up.
