Demo 7 too soft on back
« on: October 09, 2008, 00:00:25 AM »

Hi All

I've been having bike for few months and riding it is great with the exception of rear wheel hitting my
ass/saddle every time I do bigger jump/small drop off. I've recently lifted up the saddle a bit but even with me higher on
the bike it still hits "us"

The the wheel travel is on my DHX4 is 7 inch, 2.5 stroke and my weight is 90kg(200lbs).
The shock has 180psi in reservoir and spring turned twice, propedal is off.

The spring is 500x2.8 so it seems that it's rate is perfect for me according to this calc:
http://www.tftunedshox.com/tech-area/spring-calculator.html

Is there anything I'm missing in setup or should I be looking for higher rated spring ?

Right, but it's already higher then I'd like it and I wouldn't want it comes my way while I'm going DH or landing from a jump.

according to http://www.mojo.co.uk/html(mojo)/springcalc.htm the spring you need is a 543lbs so maybe a 550 will be better?

if your running 2 turns of preload then your already on the limit of that spring anyway. a 550 with no extra preload will be roughly the same.

although it wont stop the tyre touching the frame, it wont happen as often.

my bike used to do this but i moved the saddle forward and up slightly and it solved the problem.

i have a Ti spring for sale if you want, 550lbs....  Roll Eyes lol

its a problem with the way the stock DHX was valved for the Demo 7

my mate tried everything, and tried 3 different spring rates (above and below the recommended weight)

finally he got talking to TF Tuned and they said its a known problem with the way the Demo 7 designer (Brandon Sloane) specified the shock when Fox built them for the Demo 7s

my mate had TF Tuned Push his DHX and set it up right for the Demo 7 and it feels like a different bike, and does not "submarine" at the back when going off jumps like the old shock setup did

worth every ££ in his opinion

Could you ask what did they do exactly to the rear suspension/shock ?
I usually do all my repairs and maintenance my self, so only if I new what to change
I'm sure I could do it on my own.

All
Thanks for all the advices.

Yeah, some bikes are designed a bit oddly - this happened on my 224. Check you're getting full travel (or at least very close to) at the point it buzzes the seat. One think you might want to check is the bottom-out stop on the shock shaft - some are very soft, which might give just that extra couple mm for the tyre to buzz the seat.

you want to speak to Neil at TF Tuned who recomend the Push work to my friend with the Demo 7

its totally transformed his bike, and now means he can get the front (Totem Solo Air) and rear suspension to balance where before it constantly submarined which made it seriously shady to ride
