Micro Gearing
« on: October 09, 2008, 07:19:32 AM »

Ok. Did a search and didn't find anything

Looking to put my hartail SS soon and was wondering about micro gearing. Got a Hope Bulb hub at the moment and was looking to fit something like this http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=17777

Just wondering if its any better than a usual 16t SS kit and if there are any advantages/disadvantages ??

I got a 12t DMR one for my SS kit but not put on yet. You get more clearance and the gearing stays the same as long as you keep close to the gear ratio. i heard 28/12 was good for mtb 24" same feel to 36/16. Ask your local bike shop to check te ratio for you, or find on the internet Smiley

Its just a boggo kit. There more exp. one is better as the cog has a wider base so won't chew up your freehub body.

Dont go too small either, chains snap a lot easier...dont see what the facination is about. Im runnin a 14t on the back and a 29t imperial on the front, just right for my street riding on 26s

Im on 32-15, and it seems small enough really, ive got a few spare cogs down to a 12 so i might go teeny tiny but i dont know really.

32-14 is ideal, and 30-12 works aswell

Are all Pro 2s made badly or is it just me?
I am thoroughly annoyed by the whole thing.

Bmx, as usual MTB'ers see fad on the bmx side and nick em Wink on a bmx though there are advantages, mainly lower profile sprocket so less likely to wreck it grinding

Ok. Did a search and didn't find anything

God knows what you typed then, this subject has been done to death…

Anyway,

I ran 33/13 on 24” wheels for a long time and I got on fine with it.
it’s sort of “mid-size gearing” I guess, got rid of that bike about 6 months ago, I recently got an off the peg BMX which came with exactly the same 33/13 gearing for 20” wheels, so maybe my old Dirt jumper was geared a bit high, I’ve also run 38/16 on 24” which again felt fine, a slightly lower gearing ratio, so it spun out a bit sooner but made accelerating easier…

They (whoever “they” are) reckon around “55 Gear inches” is optimal (Chain ring divided by Sprocket, Times wheel diameter in inches)…

I assume your running 24” wheels so:

Example 24” SS gearing:

“Mid size”
38/16 X 24 = 57
36/16 X 24 = 54
33/13 X 24 = 60.92
32/14 X 24 = 54.85

“Micro gearing”
27/12 X 24 = 54
27/10 X 24 = 64.8
25/11 X 24 = 54.54
25/10 X 24 = 60
25/9  X 24 = 66.66

The advantages are always being debated, and it’s not worth getting into yet again, basically pick a gearing ratio you like the feel of. Using your Bulb you could go for a 27/12 ratio but I would recommend sticking with a 32 or 33 Tooth chainring and trying out 13/14/15 T sprockets (again assuming your running MTB cranks, it’s low profile gearing and you can get some useful ratios, the fact that you’ll struggle to go bellow 12T on a normal MTB cassette hub does dictate your options a bit.

MTB cranks with spiders (example Truvativ Hussefelt or Shimano Hone) won't take a chainring smaller than 32T on the middle / big ring mounting tabs

if you run a smaller chainring on the granny gear mounts it can seriously screw up your chainline...you can get around this if using a s/s conversion kit on a multi-speed freehub body as you can sit the rear cog all the way inboard (next to hub spoke flange) and run the spacers on the outside to compensate

however if you are using a s/s specific rear hub with a one-piece driver (like many BMX hubs now use) you will not be able to do this respacing trick, and this means you need to run BMX cranks with a bottom bracket setup to suit your MTB's "european" b/b shell...which means tiny bearing = reduced bearing life (this is why BMX stopped using euro shells and now use press-fit mid size or spanish standards)

something else to be aware of is that reducing sprocket and cog size has a big increase in wear and tear on your drivetrain...read this from G-Sport's George French who is something on an expert in these matters....

I work on a 2:1 + 'x' ratio, which i mustered up form trial and error.

I run 27/11 at the moment (pushing 26s's), which suits me fine. So thats 2:1 + 5
