I know this is an MTB forum, but BMX.....
« on: October 10, 2008, 09:07:37 AM »

....forums seem to be rubbish, and anyway, it feels like cheating on the missus to ask questions anywhere else on the net.

I want a BMX, 20" wheel, for larking about at the track, maybe do a few gates and possibly even a few races a bit further down the line.
I used to race loads back in the day and want to get back into it but i've lost touch with current bikes and the like.
How does sizing work on them these days?  If it helps i'm bang on 6 foot tall without any freakishly long or short limbs or anything.
I've looked at manufacturers websites, shop websites and not managed to find anything of any real use.
So anyone got any pointers, please don't tell me to bog off to a BMX forum, they're either frightfully new school with carbon forks and spd's or a bunch of old timers who have a hissy fit if you fit an '83 stem to a '85 bike.

I’ve just gone the same route…

I was a bit clueless too, but I found for Race bikes it seems longer Top tubes are a winner (21”+), I was all set to get an Aluminium DK then I spotted a 2007 GT Fueller going at Winstanleys BMX (gone now but they have '08), Full Chromoly frame/fork and not too shabby spec for quite a good discounted price, it’s a Dirt jumping bike with a 21” top tube (I’m 5’10”) I know it’s not a proper Race BMX, but I’m not a proper BMX racer, it’s a bit heavier but I’m not likely to set the world alight with my skills and a cheaper sturdier Steel frame just makes sense to me, it’s going to get crashed and dropped a fair bit I reckon…

So basically broaden your search to include dirt bikes and look at the Top tube length…

Thats the kind of thing i'm after, cheers.
Okay, i'll start looking at top tube lengths, and as for not being a proper BMX racer, neither will I be!  Grin

Yep I hit 30 next year, I figure now is the perfect time to buy a kiddies bike, and try racing it, pity the weather hasn't been on my side for it lately...

But they're great fun to just ride about on, I need to put in a few trips to Hayes, slough and Waterloo Meadow (Reading), they seem to be my local tracks and I've not gotten to them yet (being very Slack)...

Have fun...

you definatley want a longish top tube obviously. Depending on what you get, you might want larger bars. Better for going fast. If you are going to be doing a bit of a racing but dont want a race bike, avoid anything with a sprocket smaller than 30. You will just munch chains and kill rear hubs more often, plus unless you intend to ride loads of park or street aswell you dont need it.

any ideas on budget? you can get some fairly light, cheapish trail style completes nowadays. then whack a v brake lever on it. that might be best rather than buying a carbon speed machine that wont be any use anywhere but the track.

As said long top tube and wide bars but id say get some high bars as well. BMXs feel small on me and im about 5 foot 11 inchs and need high bars to ride them properly.
