The amount of water up there last week was ridiculous, you'll see tommorow where it took out a section of the forest track because the drain couldnt handle the water volume.
It had just been flowing across the road, and consequently took a big chunk with it.

Looks like its going to be a nice day tommorow weather wise aswell, that'll make a nice change. Its been a bit damp for my liking the last few weeks.

See you in the mornin Smiley

I've been through Freer's today, and it appears that despite our requests, some unauthorised construction has taken place about half way down 'Camel'.  A new ladder has appeared followed by a jump with a landing the far side of an existing track.

As we asked earlier, the ONLY construction to take place in this wood is that authorised by the FC Engineer (me), so if you know who built this, PLEASE ask them to stop, or we WILL lose the privelege of having the 'Freeride' area to work in.  As it is, I've now got to divert resources from my contractors to take these bits out, which means less time carrying out proper works, which means less track.

I fully appreciate that people are keen to get jumps and the like constructed as soon as possible, but I would ask you to please be patient and wait untill we have constructed these in the Freeride area - it will happen, but we have to go through various procedures to make sure everything complies with our guidelines etc (a faff, but unfortunately one we can't circumnavigate).

Thanks.

Hi Mike,

I've got a sneaky feeling  i know who built the jump etc your on about, i will have a polite word, in their ear when i see them next.  How did the building of the northshore go on Sunday after we left around noon?

Cheers, Tony

Building went pretty well - untill we ran out of timber for the top slats!  Another load has now been delivered so there should be plenty to finish it off now.

Then it's on to the next bit of timberwork.......

....and then the 'black' section, which'll be tight, technical and a decent challenge even for the more 'gifted' riders amongst us you.

excellent, all sounds good to me.

I had an idea about keeping people informed as to what's going on with your project after talking / listening to lots of different riders from different styles.  My brain only got thinking on this as lots of these people think they know whats going on from hear-say, which leads to rumours.

Is there anyway you could put up a notice board opposite the entrance to the sand quarry adjacent to Freers wood, with an overall map of what's going on (with the layout of the different tracks etc) along with a rough estimate of the timings of whats going on now and in the future?  -  something like they have got in Haldon Belvedere..............just a thought!

Just some feedback on what's gone on so far, the northshore over the boggy bit is now complete thanks to Mike, Al, Harvey and the guys in the main- it rides really well and will be plenty tech enough.

If the black runs are going to be tougher than this its going to be pretty mint.  And as for the "Big Drop" that little baby is riding as smooth as a really smooth thing that is really smooth, god that was fun today!!!

Just a minor crumble, i mean grumble; it would be really great if some of the XC clan could lend a hand with the building of the XC route, does anyone know the best place to let the XC boys & gals know what's going on?

Tone,
If you let me know what it is your after them doing where to meet etc I can send a bulk mail around to  my X.C.contacts. Although X.C. riders tend to be just that and are not into building so best of luck
Also you could try

Cheers Sallie,

Firstly, i'm not speaking for anyone else, but just relaying what i'm hearing out in the woods!

What it boils down to basically is that the guys building the XC trail are more into freeriding & DHing and kind of find it ironic that they're putting in all the grafting for something there not really gonna ride thaat often.

And its a bit of a wind up when people are digging out a route/shifting logs etc when a bunch of XC riders pedal up, check out what's going on and then pedal off again and not loosing a drop of sweat in the process!

In an ideal world it would be fantastic if you could enthuse the bods you know into giving up either a  morning or a whole day to help create the XC trail (that means using spades, picks and wheelbarrows etc). To HELP create something that, actually, they are going to be into riding!

The day this all happens mainly is a Sunday
anytime from 10am onwards.
Directions: From the A38 go towards Haldon Belvedere, about half a mile from the A38 there is a pull in on both sides of the road, ride down parallel to the quarry following the obvious route down, and bingo you should see some bikes/people/4x4's etc.

Any help will be gratefully appreciated Sallie.

Thanks,
tone

Tone, I have emailed all contacts that I have for cycling and asked them to mail Tim if they can help.
The good news is a couple have responded and are looking at how they can fit it in and promote the diggings so fingers crossed.  Smiley

Can i build some alternate lines round the northshore and things to keep it as a DH track from top to bottom to keep it quick. I also want to build some berms and drainage into the track thats above the wooden drop if thats ok.

So what im saying, i shall build stuff for you if you tell me what to do and let me get on with it, as long as i can add some alternate lines around things.

You can email me at scottmcnulty_88@hotmail.com if you prefer not to talk about it on here or whatever.

scott

The only area where we have some freedom is the freeride area, however, all plans for that must go pass Mike the Engineer first (but seeing how he let the danger drop stay...). The jump you built was near the red XC route. Nothing unofficial is allowed to be built there. If it does, we might lose the freeride area altogether.

If you want to build (the stuff in your pics looks pretty good), come along on a Sunday morning and help with all the other volunteers. You'll be more than welcome.

Also, its been said before but there isn't goint to be a downhill track. The plan is for a red route, black route (very techincal, flowing single track with berms, shore, jumps, etc) and the freerdie area. Something close to 10km of trails in total.

Remember, most of the Forestry Commission bigwigs view Downhill as being synonymous with being sued. Its sad that this is the case, but thats today's society for you. I blame the parents  Roll Eyes

It confuses me how free ride is viewed as ok and downhill isnt. I understand where Haldon is coming from as its not really a suitable venue for downhill although ideal for coaching young children and beginners. I blame the downhill person that decided to sue the forestry!!!!
