Mountain Biking Is A Fashion

Thats the title for my dissertation, i'm going to be investigating this as an argument, for and against the statement. If anyone can give any views i would be very grateful.

For example, you can ride trails easily on a pair of old marzocchi z1's, but many riders would rather replace these for the latest forks, being sucked in by technical specs which can offer little or no noticeable differences.
Is it by accident that your bike is colour coded? and if not why not.
Also theres the introduction of Pink accessories... retro goggles, fox & Troy Lee race gear and the likes.  Peak or no peak?

A few words, a paragraph, any opinions will help me out.

Thanks  Smiley

in one way yeah, people do see it as a fashion.

for example, you get kids who get all the gear, newest forks, frames, race kit etc. and cant ride for sh*t, they just like the image(am sure we all know some people like that)

then there are other, who are happy to ride what ever bike they get, dont matter if its old, new borrowed, they'll ride because they want to ride.

dont matter how old the stuff is. "if it aint broke dont fix it"

on the other hand, newer stuff does aid performance, more travel, stronger and lighter materials, more cost effective production methods make better products available to more people.

sometimes yes, newer stuff is pointless but it looks good so people buy it. other times its needed to help aid performance.

so in one way, yes it is a fasion, other hand no its not for many reason.

its like everything

if you have the money you get the best parts you can

the forks or what ever may not make much different but it gives you an intrinsic feeling and athetical feeling to think to yourself i have the best on the market

and yes some of it is a fashion but only within the mtb comunity i wear a troy lee hoody and t-shirt and nobody at my college has ever heared of it but as soon as i meet some one who rides they know i ride

99 % of people riding whatever be it dj, dh, bmx, trials when buying most parts take into consideration how its gonna look even if they admit it or not... changing stuff is not always about trying to look different either but the ones that do need to realise the next guys different anyway so why make a big thing about it?

you seem to see alot of people wearing fox clothing even if they dont appear to ride a bike. Also, alot of people seem to wear say, etnies rooftop trainers, even if they dont ride any form of push bike.

I was going to post something similar to this the other day. BMX has loads of fashions, ghetto paint jobs, certain wheels, etc, your either dirt park or street, tere's nothing else. An insanely light bmx with one brake and no pegs is your park dog set up, heavyish bike with one brake is your trail dog, and the ghettoest, pegged, brakeless bike is your street dog. Street bmxers swea by G-sports on Big City's, Parks swear on Odyssey hubs built on to Hazard Lites, and so on. There's also a lot of fasion decisions go in to what frame you buy etc. BMX is one bg fashion in terms of what bike you ride, and I guess MTB has a similar thing. DHers swear by Bulbs on D321's, because they look great, and they're strong, etc, they'll also do their best to keep their bike as light as possible, a bit like your BMX park dog. And well, street and DJ speak for it's self lol

Bikes become fashion accesories, maybe without even realising it is, your bike maybe a fashion accessorie, ok, you might be serious about the sport, but obviously your going to want to want your bike to look good, and be up to date, everyone does, although not everyone can afford it.

tis a good point there, manufaturers release hundreds of frames all with very similar geometry and materials, yet the brand name with the nicest colour sells most

think about it, its easy to say i'm not trying to look cool.

but lycra skin suits are faster than mx kit, yet not many wear skin suits that says alot, fashion does play its part in mtb

Trouble is, the further you push a technology, the fewer the gains per unit cost. Same in any industry. So whereas spending

Spot on, thats one example im looking at, similarly to peaks. spd's.

im not saying that i agree with my title, i need to look at both sides, and assess opinions.

im also looking at 'lead user' effect on cycling trends

Haha, you're just gonna copy and paste then dissertation done yeah haha nice one chief  Wink ignore any comment from me then :p

ermm, well to be honest I reckon if we were all loaded we'd all have the latest kit that's about regardless of what style trend you choose to follow. Even then people will be trying to mix and match so they're bike/bike stuff is different to the next persons. I don't think many people do it to purely stand out (there are a few which isn't a dis to those) but just not to be a complete clone.

now personally I don't like race jerseys and shorts so even if i had the endless amounts of money I wouldn't wear it. Though I do want a D2 and 3k rig. I'm guessing that's because I'm more a weekend rider don't aspire to get super fast times, just get my kicks and that's it. Yet again, at a guess I reckon a lot of young riders aspire to be the next steve peat and want to project that intent visually no matter how subtle. Hmm I'm waffling so I'll shut up...

Havent read all of the above but has anyone mentioned the placebo effect of getting new kit?

There's nothing like getting some shiny new kit and firmly believing you are actually quicker using it, even though you may not be!
