what motivates you?
« on: December 17, 2005, 08:03:09 AM »

I am doing some research for sports psycholgy and I am interested in what motivates people to get out there and train for a race, what keeps you going to the gym?
Do you set Goals?
How do you get yourself out the door to ride when its lashing down with rain?
Or do you just sit back and hope for the best?

I think seeing something is the best motivation wether its a pro hitting a section super fast or someone on here posting a pic of a big no hander, whatever it makes you want to go out and try it so in that sense you've given yourself a personal goal without really thinking.
Everyone wants to look as fast or stylish as the people they watch.

I really struggle to train on the turbo while i'm off the bike because theres no goals so deffinately setting goals is the most important and specific training.
If you don't feel like your benifiting from something or achieveing anything at the end of it you wont do it.

Video's and music really physce me up but then I just want to go out and hit everything at warp speed it doesn't help me focus on a specific goal.
I think theres a very fine line between being hyper and being motivated, when your hyper you haven't got a specific focus you just want to ride, when your motivated you want to do something better, faster, bigger.

After just getting back from University from my first term and only riding my bike once (for just 2 hours) in that time, I am so motivated to go and ride. Before I went I was working at sainsburys, so when I wasen't working I could ride at anytime. But being at uni, doing uni work and not having my bike (I left it at home) it left a huge hole in my time. Once i've woken up properly i'm going to go and ride all my local DH runs, there not super long but there so damm fun, when I shut my eyes I can ride them anywhere that I am. Being without my bike as shown me that you have to ride as much as you can whilst you have the chance, and not to waste a moment of it, thats my motivation.

What makes you go out when you feel like that though? Just a desire to ride, boredom etc?

Fear of getting fat doing nothing gets me out, riding is good for your body, belly & ego...

There is something quite beautiful about riding, even addictive, whether it is the whirr of the freewheel, the sound of the wind rushing past, or just the freedom or lawlessness of it all, there is nothing to match it.

Has been defined to past Girlfriends as having "bike horn", where nothing else bar going out & having a ride round will quell yer wants & needs...the same as needing a shag, the same burn & desire...

Blimey.

An addiction to Adrenalin gets me out on my bike, its the same thing that got me jumping down a 15step flight of stairs at school yesterday, and now i think i might have broken my ankle!

I just get an urge sometimes to go ride, and hit something ive never done before, its not a particular stimulus i can pinpoint.

I consider myself fortunate enough to be in good health, and have the oppertunity to ride things unthinkable even 5 years ago. No... I'm no 20ft drop freerider, but I do think of myself as a freerider, simply because bike technology has opened up a lot more doors for the average rider. I don't want to be like my Uncle, who points at the springs and calls them ugly, or call my big tyres impractical. I want to be out abusing them whilst my knees still let me!

Hi,

Couldn't sustain the levels of commitment that are required to get on the podium regularly at the major races.

So gave up, racing to win! It's not the end of the world and I'm back to having fun now, I got a lot of respect for anyone who podiums.

It's one thing to motivate to keep fit or have fun. It's quite another to win races!
