are you asking in general, or a car mechanic? boat mechanic? or bike mechanic?
as prevous guy said, i think you can do college courses in it, or just get a job at a local bike shop and tehy can train you in it...

are you wanting to become a bike mechanic??
if so your best bet is to go to your lbs bike shop, but why do you want to be a mechanic? your the same age is me and after working in a bike shop for about 14-15 months i can say i deffinately dont want to do that for the rest of my life.

Yeah the novelty value wears off very quickly.
I'd go to Halfords or your LBS although Halfords will be easier and more varied work than most bikeshops (and better pay than most bikeshops.)
If you really want to become a bike mechanic you could go on the park mechanics course but you won't need it to work in a shop.

go to your local bike shop and im guessing you only want to work there part time? and because its not a busy season they may be willing to spend the time training you for the peak season to come next year

if one bike shop turns you down just try the next and so on and if one says maybe just phone up and kindly ask if theres anything going yet but dont be pushy dont slack off if you do get the job and dont get to cocky with your mates about working in a bike shop as they only tock you on as they felt sorry for you! dont get a job in halfords it sucks my mates quitting soon because it sucks! but the pays still good

good luck anyway

sorry ... but that statement is INCORRECT ...

i can assure you my work is more varied than a halfords employee .. and easier than also ...

target for a halfords employee ... 4 barbies in an hour .. now ive seen one of these and know that it doesnt go together easy ...

my target ... 1 bike per hour regardless of size ... because .. there are the near the same amount of bolts and adjustments to be made on a kiddys bike

it will suck in most bike shops. The amount of people that have decent bikes also have the know how to fix there bike, so you only really get crap bikes in. you obviously do get a few good bikes but not enough to keep the job interesting, plus if your not already a good mechanic you wont be touching anything good anyway

sorry mate ... but i started at the bottom as a 14 year old with only half a clue  .... and ive worked up ... halfords is a conglomerate thats subsidised by there other departments .. thats the only reason they pay you more ... at the end of the day if you go for another bike related job and say ... oh yes i worked at halfords ... you will be treated as a newbie ... cause its well known that HALF (not all ) are nitwits and you are then tarred with the same brush and they mostly they work on crap ...

Well i guess it depends on the bike shop and to an extent the branch of halfords then...
I hated the bike shop despite working on some nice bikes but the work is either working on bikes or serving, whereas in halfords i'd have days working in the Ripspeed dept, loading bay, general shop duties.
But I was working with people I liked and who knew their stuff at halfords which probably helped.
As you said its not getting you anywhere on a C.V. but  for me it was a much better job and i would've gone back to that over staying at my LBS.

Obviously it all depends on what you like doing, who your working with, what your doing etc etc so it will be different for everyone.

my target ... 1 bike per hour regardless of size ... because .. there are the near the same amount of bolts and adjustments to be made on a kiddys bike  as there is an adults ... this is a target set by my boss for all employees including him he reckons this is the time it takes to get a bike into a reliable safe checked over state having used the ACT guidelines which i feel is about right ... if im on it and got into a rhythum i can do them in 45mins each ... but wouldnt like to go any faster

some days i can be working on a 4000 pound carbon road bike ...right down to the 10 pound downt market bike ... be it trikes(built a mission 16 inch for a disability charity today actually) or mtb or roadies (tri or time trials as well as sport ) or hybrids

as for the pay ... think of it as an aprenticeship .... the bike shop is repaying you with there experiance ... i think i could quite hapily open my own bike shop after 5 years in the workshop so i think the bikeshop has been more of a rewarding experiance for me than some of my mates who worked in halfords and just went in and got thrown at a bike and told to build it ...
do not go down the halfords route if you want to remotely enjoy your work take my word for that ... i know people who have been driven off there bikes by halfords depression
I work at halfords, i been there 2 years part time and hate it at times.

But i get paid almost
