Your best bet is a mintel report or bikebiz - but it will be an approximation based on mountain bikes sold which im sure you know in no way relates to the amount of people who actually mountain bike.

And whats your definition of mountain biking - trail cycling, racing, club riding, once a week, year, month?Huh?

Whats the difference between leisure cycling and mountain biking  - or those that ride their bikes in to the hills to climb a mountain.

You need to get a bit more specific for a business plan mate.

Maybe assume that bikes over X amount are going to be used more seriously therefore could be classed as mountain bikers - ooh looks tricky........

According to bike biz -
Quote
In 1998, the CTC and the National Byway estimated that there are now 23 million bikes in ownership.

23 million!!! damn im gonna be rich!

no but seriously i know you have to be mega specific to please the suits.
im gonna aim my product at downhillers and freeriders. i hate the word freeriders but it sums up the kind of person who rides a buff bike but doesnt race. how many people buy dirt magazine? that might be a good indicator.

Dude, you dont' have to be specific just to please the suits.

You need to be specific so that you can identify your target market and market segment.

Sounds anal I know but if you are selling a product to the gravity crowd ie. us lot. then you need to know how big your potential market is - how many similar products there are available - how much they cost - and what is going to be your niche.

Just stating how many people ride bikes means f**k all.

You will get laughed out the bank if you dont know this s**t - contact your local authority for help with business plans Scottish enterprise etc (I dont know what the English equivelent is - possibly English Enterprise? Embarrassed

thats why im doing my homework. i dont really want to say what i'm trying to do until i've done it but basically all the work is in place. i just need some funding so i can promote myself properly from the start rather than struggle with word of mouth. i'm not actually going to the bank to start with i have to fill in my princes trust application forms and business plan. i have every section sorted apart from the details about the size of the market and the amount of potential customers and stuff.

All the important bits then.

Well, good luck man.

oh this would help

But its a grand.

Market research costs money and its cheaper than doing the research yourself - depends how serious you are.

Could have a look at  the "ABC" figures printed on the inside cover of registered magazines.
MBUK has a distribution of 52,000 copies last time I looked. "Dirt" is not big enough to be ABC rated, but if its just general mountain biking then look at MBR etc as well.
