Headset problem
« on: December 28, 2005, 19:39:24 PM »

Hi, I've just bought some new forks and I don't know what it's called but they need the part which sits right at the bottom of the steerer tube, like a ring with a smaller ring on top...

I've got one on my old forks but dont know how to get it off (its very stuck have tried hammer and screwdriver)

Any help would be appriciated

It's the crown. Take it to a bike shop and they can use a crown race puller or something.

Yeah it must be? get 2 screw drivers and poke the heads in under it one on each side- then push down on the screw driver handles and lever it off perhaps?

get a hammer and a screw driver to take it off.  put it on again with a piece of wood and a lump hammer.

He said he's tried a hammer and screwdriver etc. It might cause damage as well if you try too much. A good bike shop will have a crown race puller as I said, and that would take a few seconds to get it off.

wedge a screwdriver under part of it and twist it slightly then carry on all the way around and it should come off eventually.

what you do, with a tried and tested method by me!

turn your forks upside down, get a hammer/mallet, preferably a leather or plasitc one. And gently hit it going either clockwise or anti-clockwise round the crown thing. Do it in small incriments and eventually it should come off.

Worked for me and no damage to the crown thing so no need for a new one.

barbie that means they work on 15% or sus for and i'd say your being to genorouse there

best thing to do is get a new one you lbs should be able to order one in as itll be a spare from the distributors of the head set

if you take them off with a screw driver you may sligtly bend it even if it is unnoticable it may still cause your bearings to run differently and feck them quicker
