new cranks time then..
« on: January 16, 2006, 22:51:53 PM »

No shops will fit me a new helicoil in my old raceface crank arm for some reason, so I'm turning to buying a new crankset. I was gonna get hones but I'm not sure about their external bearings thing, and I'm really heavy so they might not hold up? I was runnning FSA Smack Daddies on my bmx for over 2 years no problems and am currently running them on my mtb with a single front chainring. This would all be fine but I want to switch to 2 or maybe 3 chainrings as I only really ride XC anyway, and they are heavy for XC! I have snapped cheapo flexy cranks before and its not fun so I want something that can stand up to aggressive xc and maybe light street/mini ramp riding. I dunno what to get, theres so much on offer. These seem pretty nice and get good CRC reviews but what do you lot think?

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Reviews.aspx?ModelID=7607

The other option would be to get a DMR spider which allows the use of 2 chainrings instead of one which I have now and get a 22mm drill bit for drilling out the spindle hole? What do you think about this?

Cheers!

if fitted by hamfisted mechanics then yes square taper is bad ... but ive ridden tapers forever .....

using a middleburn chainset and a raceface taperlock bb with locktited crank bolts and done to the correct torque ...

never had a problem and anyone who knows me will tell you im a harsh rider .... 2 frames in as many months this year ... baws ....

isis has to small a taper on it to provide a good fit there is always some movement in it (to small to feel but its there ) and if you have movement on a spline you have wear on the softer material (crank arm)  plus the bb bearings are toooo small

not saying this to sell mine cos i dont think they are what your needing .. mines have the dual spider on so can only take big and middle rings no small

but i believe its all marketing hype .. from the point of view of having seen many more isis cranks die from hard use than good quality tapered cranks ....

xtype / saint style is the way forward but i do believe that a good quality set of tapered cranks and a good quality bb will outlast a good quality set of isis ... which has been proven in the area where i live when im still on the original set of cranks and bb and everyone i know with isis has been thro lots of race face sigs and gigapipe dhes ... and without a taper play can develope between the cranks and the bb

the tapered weak thing coms from people using s**t componants like fsa power pros and un52/72 bbs which snap ten a penny and the cranks round like there made from stilton !

Nah I dont think your middleburns will be what I want then, I need something small (like 22-24t) for my xc, going through muddy fields with a 39t is near impossible!

Any other cranks you can recommend on a budget? Another alternative (and my preferred method if possible) is re-helicoiling my raceface crank arm. How do I determine what type of helicoil thread and size I need?

which side is it ? if its left hand threaded side be prepred to pay through the nose for it cos those aint common ... plus there may not be enought material for a helicoil due to ribbing or hollow insides perhaps ...

Its drive side so regular thread. There is enough room for a helicoil, as it had one fitted before, it just came out when I changed pedals and broke. So at least I know it is possible for one to go in. Just got no idea what I need to get as a replacement!
