Help me lighten my Vp-free ***UPDATE***
« on: February 10, 2006, 19:14:30 PM »

This is my Vp-free:

http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/732659/
http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/732658/

It currently weights a respectable 38lbs with the Ti' spring, new Thompson post and new Pro Tapers. I want it to be lighter.

Could the kind people so sdh.com let me know their weight saving tips, just a few provisos:
1- Not intersted in Ti' bolts as they are too weak for my ham fisted use of tools
2- Cant afford new forks so no "get fox 40's/06 world cups" etc

I want to investigate tube-less; is it worth it? And how much have peoples set-ups cost them (including tyres)?

Thanks for your time

James

thats looking pretty light already, only real cost efficiant saving will be to go tubeless. Anything else on that bike and your looking at 10's of grammes not hundreds.

Cost wise there are various options, 2 new rims onto ex823/819s will cost you

Best way to lose weight and notice the difference mate is the wheels..........I personally dont use tubeless anymore (was running 05 deemax UST's) but this is just due to current hub/frame choice.....................they are a good way to drop the weight and arent too expensive (just had another look at yours pics and you seem to running lightish wheels anyway).

As you have said not to mention 06 WC's/Fox 40's/ti bolts........I wont, but are a good way of dropping chunks of weight............also look at carbon s/post, bars or the SDG I-beam system, carbon c/device, cranks and I know its petty and a little expensive but floating disc rotors are lighter than the standard s/steel discs but not by massive amounts.

Oh and nice ride.

xc tubes?

also could get a e thirteen lg 1 and some xt cranks, ti chainring?

dowbt you would want a dhx air as you have a ti coil...

hope stem or a thompson, but deffinetly a i beam combo, they are very light..

loose the bash ring on your chain device, carbon seatpost, plastic bar ends, maybe look into 32tooth rims and hubs, maybe fit a lighter stem which suits you, maybe get a lighter bb, change the crank arms for a lighter option.
some ideas, but your set up looks to be quite light, why did you want your bike to be a bit lighter?

Thanks for the advice guys, wheelset is the obvious thing to change but I am a heavy rider so i'm worried about punctures? I can run standard tubes if it all go's tits up out on the trail though cant I?

Current set up is Bulbs on Atomlab GI's (36 hole) DB spokes, DH tubes and Maxxis highrollers, guess theres a fair bit of weight to safe there (and the atomlabs are w*nk).

Forks are in the pipeline, but not for a few months.

Going to look into the Carbon MRP/XT crank set idea- but then the whole issue of the Vp-free's obscenly wide bb rears it head, not sure if a pure XC crank will come out wide enough.

XC tubes should be fine, I'm 13.5 stone and run them with no issues.  Some light 721 rims might save some weight and probably stronger.

yeah get rid of the rims, get some XT cranks or a ti BB.

Could also change the springs in the forks to TI ones?
And change the stem to a thompson one!

If you use something like Stan's No Tubes sealant in your tyres, you can save weight, and because it's rotating weight, then it'll make more of a difference when out riding than buying lighter hubs etc. The stuff apparently works very well too. I'll probably be buying some for the Summer.

looks like its going to be a hard job to loose some weight on that bike, grams rather than pounds and considerable cost....not being funny but how about loosing some body weight Huh- not sure how much you weigh Huh and  I am trying my best to not insult you !!!!!but ive seen plenty of customers coming in for lighter bike parts when they could go  on a diet and save a bikes worth of weight!!!- I guess this all comes down to why you want to loose weight on the bike... is it for cool appeal, it it cos it may or may not handle better, is it better acceleration you want , do you ride uphills( ie freeride?) do you think that your race times might be quicker if the bike is lighter???

give us an idea of why you want a lighter bike ?

for Dh Im not too concerned about weight but for xc and road I am and confirmed weight weenie but before I even think about looking at lighter bike parts I make sure my % body fat is less than 10%!! whcih means I watch what I eat and drink during the racing season- which is a pain in the ass but I feel better for it and I feel its worth the sacrifice.
