shorten your gear cable special, you'll save loads there - you fag...
Sam, Sam, Sam I just can't take advice from someone who is sick into recycling bins. give us an idea of why you want a lighter bike ?
Because I can and I'm a sucker for new bike parts. Just spoke to my LBS, they have recently done some tubeless wheels for a Demo9 and they say it lost 4lbs, which sounds worthwhile. 35 lbs is my target, the ust wheels should take me under that I rekon. Thanks for the advice everybody.

Hello, I'm (formerly) Mr Ed
|
Thanks for the advice guys, wheelset is the obvious thing to change but I am a heavy rider so i'm worried about punctures? I can run standard tubes if it all go's tits up out on the trail though cant I?
Current set up is Bulbs on Atomlab GI's (36 hole) DB spokes, DH tubes and Maxxis highrollers, guess theres a fair bit of weight to safe there (and the atomlabs are w*nk).
Forks are in the pipeline, but not for a few months.
Going to look into the Carbon MRP/XT crank set idea- but then the whole issue of the Vp-free's obscenly wide bb rears it head, not sure if a pure XC crank will come out wide enough.
i know you can fit 73mm saints to vp frees you just need to file down a spacer to get it to fit, so xt's might work, as for the stoke, pm cromozone as i know hes got one he might be pursuaded to sell/part ex for a drop crown. hth ed

You could look at trying to save weight at the front, maybe go for an integrated Crown/stem, or ditch the boxxer and go for a long travel single crown: 66SL's perhaps? same travel could same 1-1.5Lbs maybe? DHX air is an option but I'd hold off that as there are currently stories about cold weather issues and heat build up... wheels and tyres are a good place to save weight, EX721's or even XM321/F519's will save some weight and won't cost the earth, or if you can stretch to EX 823 and tubeless tyres you may save more... 24" wheels maybe? but that could be a compromise too far for some.... I know some trials riders drill their rims, again this is pretty extreme.... You could go for a real XC crank setup, Stylo GXP? RS8's with a nice light XC ring, ditch your bash guard, but again it's a pretty critical area to start sacrificing strength.... Switch to 7 a speed road cassette? you'd just need a new cassette, a different shifter and a spacer, might save a little weight, and you lose a couple of gears which you might not miss, also look into a carbon back plate for your mech cage from here... You could look into a Ti BB, or see if you can get a Ti axle and/or spring for your boxxers, possibly even convert one or both legs to use air?!? (most likely can't be done, but worth finding out)... There are loads of possibilities, to save weight but very few are cheap and alot are downright dangerous.... 38Lbs for a DH bike is a very good weight, in order to really beat that your looking at laying out alot of cash for very little real benefit, still it is fun trying.... Good luck, AC...

The only thing I haven't seen mentioned is getting a new E13 LG1 guide and sell the current one. I think you can cut up the bash and fit it underneath to form a fixed bash guard. Will save a fair chunk. Carbon bars are lighter but not much. Wheels - You could just try regular xc tubes and loads of talc. I've managed to smack a wheel hard enough to crack the rim (a Mavic 521) without getting a puncture with that setup. (I've never had a puncture running Maxxis tyres on the DH bike) Will save a pound or 2 depending on the tubes you were running vs what you fitted. There's not much extra to be saved by running tubeless (other than the lighter rims of course) Your forks are pretty light already but you could try asking TF if he has a Ti Spring that would fit? You could save 100gs or so by going anorexic on the saddle. Most of the rest you're talking tens not 100s of grammes savings and it's the law of diminishing returns........ HTH G
