Basically the shutter speed would have been reasonably long but because you used a flash which lit up the rider for say 1/4000 of a second, he has been 'frozen' but then he's moved and the flash is no longer lighting, so the only light left is from the sky so that shows up as well. only way around it would be to use a faster shutter speed because that should not affect the flash lighting but will affect the ambient light (you would end up with a non see through rider, but may not see the patched of sky...)
but even so my camera still doesn't give the best light levels, even when the flash is used.
any way i can get a better light level into the camera? i know theres shooting into light and that. but the trails where the pics were taken are pretty dark.
You don't really have any options other than to use flash, have a look in the manual to see if you can adjust the power of the flash?
The only other thing you can do is to take pictures against a dark background with flash, because then you shouldn't get a see through rider plus the exposure should be better because the camera is trying to expose for dark ground (which will be a similar brightness to the rider) instead of a bright sky. Thats what I often do, standing on a lip/in a tree/up a ladder.
Right one tip that hasnt been mentioned is to make sure you pan with the rider, this means they are clearer in the shot because the camera gets more readings off them than the back ground, if you sort of follow my lead.
Best example I have taken is this http://www.deviantart.com/view/26365681/ In that the rider is a good deal clearer because even though i have a powerful flash to pick him out, my panning with him thorugh the drop kept him clear in the photo. Shutter was 1/60th and a f5.6 aperture.
Pah, mine is actually a ghost *Edit - Due to protest, lookin' like a crack head, and Dan just generally being a bitch, i've changed it for another photo
It depend on your camera. If you are running a normal compact camera then you cant do much with the shutter speed or aperture or flash. The reason you get the ghost effect is the night mode has a slow shutter speed to let in more light as its obviously dark. However as you havent got the adjustments you may find it hard and the only way is by panning with the riders like mop head said.By that its just a case of practice of getting your camera speed and judgement good.
