Service is the main thing but I find Chainreaction far more reliable and often cheaper than my LBS even when i worked there we hardly have anything usefull in stock.

Online is conveinient and they generally can afford to stock much more but if a bike shop gives a good service i'd rather buy through them.

I agree with supporting the high street but to be honest not at my own expence or inconvenience so if the shop can't provide I will buy online.

and its a real shame too.
this new generation of riders has been brought up on mail order purchasing and as a result has hurt the industry as a whole. as you say though once they've bought a product some of them then proceed to bugger it up and in turn proceed to their local store and are faced with a shop owner who is slightly more reluctant to do a job for them.
in the end you lose out as we'd fit a disc for free if you bought it from us.

Not all shops are the same though.
I totally agree with you but its not always the case and that is at least part of the reason shops are getting less custom.
I'd be happy to pay more for the service you expect from a local shop but if you aren't getting that service you aren't going to pay more and often wait longer for something you can fit yourself.

I think this is another problem aswell now- the majority of "proper" riders can do 90% of mechanics themselves and find info easily online which means theres no need to get a shop to do it for them.

I'm not naming where I worked but they were a complete rip off for most stuff and the service was poor at best making most people go elsewhere or online.
We rarely had what people were asking for in stock yet it never encouraged the management to get the stuff in.

I appreciate its a difficult industry to be part of but a shop like that will encourage a lot of people to cut the middle man.

i only use my lbs for things i need quickly, like a tube or a little tool. i would never go through them for big things unless i absoloutly had to, for the sheer fact they charge rrp and wont budge any lower, and the guy who runs it is always looking for a way to make more money out of you. my older brother bought some

the things bike owners are not there just for the love of cycling, its our hobby not theirs, they re shops and are there to make money and provide a service the same as mail order companies.  Every one of us want to save money and get a bargin, but without supporting a good lbs why should they support you? i can see that insted of moaning about them earning a living we ll be here moaning that there are no lbs shops around and asking why, it won't happen over night but if trends continue in years to come it will happen

I use one local bike shop (Switchback Cycles in Knaphill) and then chainreaction online, I like using the shop, even if it's just going in, having a chat for half an hour and buying an inner tube they are nice guys who enjoy riding so know what they are on about. If there prices were the same or close to CRC then I would use Switchback cycles all the time, but at the moment I don't have much money, so haven't been buying much stuff!

i use my LBS (don skene) for all major parts (frames, forks etc) as the sevice is quick, they do a good job and hopefully know what there on about as they have a race team.  But i do sometimes buy stuff like tyres, tubes, pedels etc from mail order as you save a bit, and there easy to fit.

Ultimately, a shop is a business & there to make money, like every business.

I do use both, but out of choice, I would go for mail order/internet because I refuse to pay the huge differences in price, or beat the shop up so they will price match, which they do...

I like the Idea of supporting a local business, but my problem is that there are no good Bike shops near by (no offence wassa).

I support other local shops like the car parts place down the road, I would always rather by from a shop, but its just not possible even with a half decent bike shop which I would need to go 10 miles into the centre of Oxford for.

Hence I use chain reaction and fit stuff myself, bodging where i can.

local every time! never bought anything off the internet or mail order. I got to mountain mania btw..
1. with local i can try stuff on
2. i can get help with buying as to which will suit me best
3. customer services like returns, or anything like that is p**s easy
4. okay so maybe it's a bit more expensive, but with local you can take stuff back to be checked/ serviced or whatever and anyway a bike shop's got to make a living somehow.
5. they're nice people (and all have accounts on here so i have to be nice  Tongue )

EDIT:oh yeah, and
6. it's so much easier to just go down into tring, then have to wait 2 weeks to get the things

1/2)I always try to buy local where I can, unless theres a ridiculous bargain to be had or I need a particular part very quick.

3) I find that kinda cheeky to be honest, I'm not entirely comfortrable doing that...

4) LBS

5) I like having decent help and banter close to home that I can pop out to whenever I need to (up till 7 at night in one case) and get a cup of coffee into the bargain. When was the last time CRC offered you a coffee or hot chocolate on a cold night?

Fact of the matter is that whilst Glasgow might be ass for local DH it has 3 excellent shops in the city centre(ish) who are run by people who actually care about what they're doing and will offer a decent service. If they can't do it for you there and then they'll send you on to one of the others if they think you want it done in a hurry and fit things for free if you've bought off of them. Oh and we also have Wheelcraft out in the hills who make excellent wheelbuilds (as if you never guessed) as well as the good banter thing...

I'll use Mountain Mania in Tring if i can, but there are some things thats its damn near impossible to get from your LBS in any kind of hurry.  eg. FiveTen's, E-13's etc.

But having said that, i recently ordered a few raceface bits off the web, and they didnt arrive on time because the shop didnt actually have them in stock, despite telling me that they did.  So i rang Jamie at MM and asked what equivelant parts he had in stock.  I ended up with a .243 racing post and a dangerboy stem, along with a few other bits, all for a damn reasonable price, with a bit of a discount and thats not even mentioning the fact that he built my rear wheel for me in about 30mins flat purely because i wanted to go riding the next day!!

That's service!

I use online bike shops for 99% of my bike stuff.
The reason being - I dont really need anyones advice from a bike shp because if I dont know something or I want an opinion Ive got plenty of rider mates, plus everyone on this forum to give me some help.
It is worthwhile to note that I do have a good local bike shop. They have all the equiptment and all the know-how, but after a couple of trips and a couple of sales I didnt feel comfortable with the service. I felt they were pushing me to spend money unnecessarily and they werent treating me as well as they could of.
I only go there to get jobs done which I cant do myself - headtube faced, headset pressed in and BB fitted.

I feel that if they wanted my regular custom they should have dealt with me differently.
