Just wondering, but can you use the trials one for general messing about in the dirt, as it supposedly has 48 engagements?

Well, as I understand it (and I may well be wrong) the trials version has two pairs of pawls, ofset from one another, so the rotation to engagement is halved compared to the regular version. However, the flipside to this is that, ultimately, the hub cannot handle as much torque. You may laugh, but over time, this has been the demise of my Bulb, (although rumour has it Hope will replace the ratchet when I actually get round to contacting them. They're an awesome company to deal with, so I'm confident of this fact).

With the deeper ratchet compared to the bulb, I'd guess you could expect similar lifetimes (few years) from the trials pro 2 providing you look after it and monitor the condition of the pawls.

I'm sure if you contact Hope they will advise you of this though.

From what I've been reading, Hope's designing is a bit hit and miss, seems like lots of corners have been cut to lead to this massive price drop compared to the bulb. I personally liked bulbs, but after trying a Hadley with 128 engagements it made a Bulb feel slow, so god knows what it will feel like compared to a ProII. People moan they are so expensive, well the CNC tolerances are much tighter than hopes, all freehubs are titanium along with most of the internals. You can if you want to wait about a week longer than getting hopes, get Hadleys from Unreal Cycles for not a lot more money:
