« on: February 27, 2006, 23:02:06 PM »

So, im a little confused now. i dont really know what im looking for, but im off to whistler in the summer and would like to do other filming too. and i just dont know what to buy. any suggestions. i've probly got about

mate on ebay there is some poo! make sure you get a major brand with a warranty! the other ones are generally poo! Plus you can generally find some cams cheaper from the major online shops.

Personally i'd get a Mini DV as they are smaller and DVD ones are generally quite large in my view.

If I remember correctly the DVD cams run a lower resolution than Mini DV, and the DVDs themselves cost a bomb.

My Dad has a DVD camcorder and on playback it seems prone to a bit of scrambling if the camera is subjected to too much movement/vibrations. As for riding with one in your backpack linked to a helmet cam I would suggest it wouldn't be good at all because of all the vibrations. However filming standing still with a steady hand makes a world of difference. I don't know whether it's to do with the settings or just the user, as I didn't have long to play with it when he was over from NZ a couple weeks ago.

Your Dad's right I think, the write head on the DVD burner will go all over the shop and maybe produce lots of coasters if you go riding with one.

It was a decent Sony one he got, about

The DVD camcorders seem to me to be a bit of a gimmik unless you just want it to film mundane family events etc. and dont have a clue how to edit onto a DVD through the computer.

MiniDV is the way to go, theyre small, compact and the tapes are cheap and rewritable. Also, a good brand like Panasonic, Sony etc is easyily acquirable for the budget end of the market. Also, the quality is superb with a firewire connection to the computer and it seems to me that there is generally less to go wrong!

All the settings are adjustable on my Panasonic GD87 (something like that) and the quality is brilliant when the footage is shown on the TV.

Although i have no actual experience in DVD camcorders i have to say they do seem slightly pointless for the amount of money and for

One thing to watch out for with a Mini DV camcorder is the tape deck. They are extremly sensitive, and getting dust in them can really screw things up. I found out the hard way and got a repair bill of
